5 Thanksgiving Picture Books to Celebrate Turkey Day

Fall leaves crunch underfoot and pumpkin spice is more than just in the air—it’s everywhere you turn. Yes, there’s no escaping fall (my favorite season), especially now that November is upon us. Thanksgiving is only a few weeks away and I confess that lately, visions of turkey, mashed potatoes, and pumpkin pie have been dancing in my head. I love this time of year, not only for the food, but more because of the traditions and family time that accompany the holiday season.

With Thanksgiving in mind, here are five delightful Thanksgiving picture books that celebrate the history and traditions of Turkey Day. Adults and children alike will be captivated by these fun, insightful stories.

Balloons Over Broadway: The True Story of the Puppeteer of Macy’s Parade

Watching Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is a tradition shared by many families, mine included. I love cozying up with a blanket and hot chocolate to watch the amazing balloons, floats, and Broadway musical numbers parade down 5th Avenue. This delightful tale is the true story of Tony Sarg, a German American puppeteer and illustrator who came to be known as “America’s Puppet Master”. In 1928, Sarg and his protege built large helium-filled balloons, some up to 125 feet long, resembling various animals. These became the first, now iconic, balloons millions love to see in the annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Both you and your kids will enjoy this interesting behind-the-scenes look at a long-standing American tradition.

Thank You, Sarah : The Woman Who Saved Thanksgiving

Without Sarah Josepha Hale, the national Thanksgiving holiday we celebrate today may not be in existence. Hale is widely known for authoring the popular nursery rhyme “Mary Had a Little Lamb”, but many consider her work to establish Thanksgiving as a national holiday to be her true legacy. Hale’s advocacy began in 1846 and lasted 17 years until President Abraham Lincoln established a national holiday of Thanksgiving in 1863. This book tells Hales captivating story and explains to children how Thanksgiving as we know it do came to be.

The Thanksgiving Story

This Caldecott Honor–winning picture book brings the story of the first Thanksgiving to life in vivid detail. Giles, Constance, and Damaris Hopkins travel to the New World as pilgrims on the Mayflower. Their little brother Oceanus is born on the ship during their passage. When they arrive in the New World, their colony endures sickness, hunger, and harsh elements, but thanks to the Native Americans they might just make it through their first year in the new land. This historical account is sure to be a family favorite that will be cherished for years to come.

Growing up I hated my thick, curly hair. I wore it long for years just to weigh it down. I didn’t know how to take care of it, let alone style it. I dreaded my mom running the comb through my hair at night to get out all the tangles. After spending my teenage years fighting with a flat iron and a multitude of straightening products, I finally gave up and decided to embrace my curly hair.

Styling curly or wavy hair isn’t difficult as long as you have the right products. In fact, it’s much easier and takes less time than working against what nature gave you. Here are the five best styling products for curly hair that will help you embrace the hair you were born with.

Living Proof Curl Defining Style Cream

This is the most recent styling cream that I’ve tried and I have to say I’m pretty impressed with the results. Usually I have to use a pomade to tame the frizz after diffusing my hair, but I don’t need to when I use this stuff. It enhances my curls and helps me achieve the overall shape that I want–no triangle head for me.

Bed Head On the Rebound Curl Re-Call Cream

If you want to make your curls or waves bounce, this styling cream will do the trick. Use anywhere from a nickel to a quarter size amount depending on your hair length. Then, twist your hair into sections all the way around your head. Finally, blow dry with a diffuser. You’ll have ringlets that last all day!

Biolage Styling Gelée

Thick, curly hair runs in my family and this gel is my mom’s favorite. It’s great for every length of hair and smells like walking into a fresh garden. Stronger than your average styling cream, this gel is great to use if you want more structure and a firmer hold. I like to use it if I’m going to let my hair air dry because it tends to keep my hair from poofing out and losing its shape.

Aveda Be Curly Curly Enhancer

I love Aveda products for their natural ingredients and commitment to the environment. Their Be Curly line does a great job enhancing natural curls while moisturizing your thirsty hair. The Curly Enhancer is a styling cream that can be used alone or combined with the Be Curly Style Prep, which helps infuse moisturizer and define your curls even more. For optimum results, blow dry your hair with a diffuser.

Aveda Brilliant Anti-Humectant Pomade

If I could only have one hair product in my arsenal, this pomade would be it. I’ve used it on wet and dry hair to achieve both curly and straight styles. It’s lightweight and tames frizz like nobody’s business without being greasy or sticky. Thick or thin, curly or straight, this product is one no lady (or gentleman for that matter) should be without.

5 Questions to Ask Yourself Before Getting a Pixie Cut

Deciding to get a pixie cut is a big decision. Celebrities like Michelle Williams, Anne Hathaway, and Jennifer Lawrence—just to name a few–are all famous for chopping off their precious locks. There seems to be a certain sense of power and freedom that comes from making such a bold style move.

I’ve had varying hair lengths throughout my life, but last spring I decided to go shorter than I ever had before. That’s right ladies, I’m talking about the alluring yet frightening choice to get a pixie cut. Before my pixie cut (shown below on the left), I had kept my hair somewhere between shoulder and chin length for several years—I’d never cut it above my ears.

To help you decide if now is the right time, here are five questions to ask yourself before you get a pixie cut. 5 Questions to Ask Yourself Before Getting a Pixie Cut - Tipsaholic.com #pixie #pixiecut #haircut #shorthair

Ultimately, I decided that the pixie cut wasn’t my best look and have since started to grow my hair out (current photo above on right). But, I don’t regret my decision at all. In fact, it’s my personal opinion that every woman should be bold and try the pixie cut at least once. To help you decide if now is the right time, here are five questions to ask yourself before you get a pixie cut.

How drastic of a change am I ready to make?

This is the key question to ask yourself before yielding to your stylist’s scissors. A pixie cut will be unlike any other cut you’ve gotten in the past, especially if you’ve been a long-haired girl for years. If there are already a lot of changes happening in your life, it might be best to hold off until things have settled down.

Why do I want a pixie cut?

For me, it was all about the need for a change and being ready to try something completely out of my comfort zone. I’d wanted to take the plunge for a couple years but didn’t have the guts to do it until last spring. I started talking with my stylist about how my hair would look in pixie cut a few haircuts prior to actually doing it. That helped us both determine when I was ready.

What new products and tools will I need to invest in?

This is an important topic to discuss with your stylist. He or she knows your hair best and will help you pick out the right products and tools. For example, if you currently have shoulder length or longer hair and routinely use a 1-inch curling iron to achieve effortless beach waves, chances are that curling iron won’t do your pixie cut much good. With my cut, adding a pomade was the most important investment for me.

Am I prepared to go through the awkward grow out phase?

Most women I know, including myself, look to celebrities for their hair inspiration. What we often fail to remember is that celebrities have endless funds and staff to help them achieve amazing hair results. They can transition from a pixie cut to a long, thick ponytail in no time thanks to expensive hair extensions. for us ladies in the real world, growing your hair out takes time and the in-between stages can be frustrating (headbands and bobby pins are your best friend).

If I hate my new cut, how will I cope with it?

This is another very important question to ask yourself before you make that hair appointment. If you’ve never made a drastic hair change, I wouldn’t recommend cutting it all off at once. Make the transition over a period of a few months so it’s not such a shock to your system. But if this isn’t your first rodeo and you find changing your look empowering, go for it and don’t look back.

If you can answer all of these questions and your resolve is still firm, you’re ready to join the pixie ranks. Now go make that hair appointment with your stylist ASAP!

How to Identify and Treat Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)

beautiful woman sitting in front of the window

SAD title

If you’ve been feeling moody, sluggish, and out of sorts for the past few weeks, it’s not necessarily a simple case of the winter blues. You may be experiencing seasonal affective disorder (SAD) — a type of depression related to the changes in the seasons. SAD is commonly referred to as “winter depression” and typically starts in late fall and continues through winter.

MedicineNet.com reveals that studies show SAD is about “four times more common in women than men” and that 23 is the average age for when people first develop the illness. Here are the symptoms and recommend ways to treat seasonal affective disorder.

According to The Mayo Clinic, common SAD symptoms, include:

  • Oversleeping
  • Irritability and tiredness
  • Changes in appetite, especially cravings for carbohydrate-laden foods
  • Weight gain
  • Trouble with interpersonal relationships
  • Heavy, lead-like feeling in arms and legs

Light therapy is a common, effective treatment for SAD. Dr. Linda Pourmassina, an internal-medicine physician at The Polyclinic in Seattle, says: “Mild SAD can improve significantly with light therapy, which involves sitting for a specified period of time about two feet from a light box that emits 2,500-10,000 lux of light at eye level.” She recommends discussing your symptoms and medical history with your doctor to determine if light therapy is right for you.

If your doctor thinks you’ll benefit from using a light box, check out the Mayo Clinic’s overview of what to consider before you make your light box purchase. A great option is the Lightphoria 10,000LUX Energy Light Lamp which is less than $70 and is a #1 Best Seller on Amazon.com.

People with more serious cases of SAD often benefit from taking an antidepressant or engaging in psychotherapy to learn helpful coping strategies. If you or a family member is having symptoms consistent with SAD, schedule an appointment with your doctor to determine the best course of treatment.

Even if you don’t suffer from seasonal affective disorder, Dr. Pourmassina has some great recommendations for ways to improve your energy and mood during the often dreary winter months:

  • Schedule social activities with friends and family so you have something to look forward to and a reason to get out the house
  • Avoid carbohydrate rich comfort foods, which can spike your blood sugar negatively impacting your mood and energy levels
  • Bundle up and take regular walks outside to get fresh air and sunshine

For information about SAD, visit The Mayo Clinic website.

Whether you live in a one-bedroom apartment or four-bedroom home, keeping every surface and area clean often feels overwhelming. Life is busy enough without worrying about keeping your tub free of soap scum and kitchen floor glistening. Plus, who really wants to spend hours a day cleaning anyway? There are tons of strategies out there to help you get the job done faster. To get you started, here are five ways to fast clean your home that you can implement right now.

tipsaholic title divider - how to fast clean your home

Set a timer

If you’re trying to speed up the cleaning process, set the timer for 15 minutes and focus on one task such as dusting or one area of the house like the family room. You’ll be surprised how much you can accomplish in a short amount of time. Once those 15 minutes are up, move on to the next room or task. This tip can also be a great way to motivate your kids to help out. Having an end point in sight helps reducing whining; plus, they can race each other to see who can complete the most chores the fastest.

timer

Work top-to-bottom, left-to-right

Cleaning a room from top to bottom isn’t a cliche saying without merit. Arianne Cohen from Woman’s Day says cleaning experts recommend starting at the tallest point of the room and completing your tasks from left to right. This approach will prevent you from missing spots in the room and dirtying areas you’ve already cleaned.

cleaning from top to bottom

Keep cleaning supplies in every room

Keeping cleaning supplies in every room makes it easier to clean as you go and take care of messes as soon as they happen. This also helps break up tasks. You don’t have to set aside a specific time to clean the entire bathroom if you quickly complete a task or two as you go about your typical day.

cleaning supplies

Invest in a 50 ft extension cord

Most of us aren’t lucky enough to have a vacuum system built into our home. To prevent having to unplug the vacuum each time you move to a new room, invest in a 50 ft. extension cord. Extra tip: use your vacuum attachments to clean inside drawers and remove dust from shelves instead of setting aside a separate time to dust.

extension cord

Use microfiber cloths

Microfiber cloths leave lint and streak free results and won’t damage paint or other surfaces. One swipe across a mirror or window and you’re done. Using these cloths are also a great way to cut down on paper towel costs and be more environmentally friendly. You can purchase a 24-pack from Amazon.com for $12.99 with free shipping for Amazon Prime members. They also make great dusters without the need for any additional cleaning solutions.

The kitchen can be one of the more difficult rooms in your home to keep clean.  A high traffic area prone to spills, grime, and grease, regular maintenance is a must. Keeping appliances and surfaces clean doesn’t mean you have to use harsh chemicals. Baking soda and vinegar provide many green living, natural options. Here are five strategies for how to keep your kitchen clean that you can start using today.

tipsaholic title divider - how to keep your kitchen clean

Prevent hard water stains

To help prevent hard water stains, make it a habit to dry up water immediately and wipe down your faucet after every use. If some hard water stains do develop, Home Guides recommends creating a solution of vinegar, water, and a splash of lemon juice to treat the stains.

Wash dishes while you cook

It’s tempting to toss all your dirty dishes in the sink while you’re baking or cooking a meal. If you have a dishwasher, make sure it’s empty before you start cooking so you can load dirty items as soon as you’re done using them. If you don’t have a dishwasher, wash and put away each utensil, pan, and bowl as you go so you don’t end your cooking session with an overflowing sink and no energy to cleanup afterwards.

dish washing

Peel fruits and vegetables into a paper or plastic bag

Peeling fruits and vegetables into a plastic bag rather than the sink or cutting board makes cleanup a breeze. Real Simple has more great tips for using plastic bags as clever cleaning tools. Green living bonus–if you use a paper bag instead of plastic, you can take your scraps directly to your yard waste bin or compost pile.

peel vegetables into bags

Clean the oven with natural products

You don’t have to use harsh chemicals to achieve superior results when cleaning your oven. Stephanie from Hello Natural has a great recipe for a DIY non-toxic oven cleaner. During fall and winter when your oven sees more traffic, implementing a bi-weekly cleaning schedule will cut down on grease and grime buildup.

Clean the dishwasher once a month

A dishwasher is responsible for cleaning dishes–so why does it need to be cleaned? Believe it or not, using a combination of vinegar and baking soda to clean your dishwasher once a month will help keep your appliance in good working order and cleaning dishes at its highest capacity. Check out The Kitchn’s great tutorial to get started.

Make a DIY Car Kit

Ashley from 7th House on the Left shared how to make an awesome DIY car kit on IHeart Organizing. She uses a solid wicker basket to hold essentials like a first aid kit, tire repair kit, duct tape, bottled water, and warm blanket. She also organized all her important car-related papers (e.g. insurance card, owner’s manual etc.) in one folder to keep in the glove compartment. Taking the time to make a car kit will not only help you stay organized, it will also ensure you’re prepared in case of an emergency.

Invest in Back Seat Organizers

Kids often need entertainment while riding in the car. Invest in back seat organizers to hold their toys, coloring books, and snacks. You can find many options to choose from on Etsy. If you’re adventurous and crafty, you can sew your own back seat organizers. Jennifer from Sewplicity has a great tutorial that shows how to customize the size based on your vehicle’s seats.

Use a plastic cereal container as a garbage can

Organize your trunk with shower caddies

Heidi from The Castro HAPPYnings has one of the most organized car trunks I’ve ever seen. Her secret to keeping her mini-van clean and orderly is plastic shower caddies over the backs of her seats. The plastic pockets are filled with necessities like wipes, sunscreen, and much more. You can typically find inexpensive plastic shower organizers at your local Target, dollar store or online.

Keep a large canvas bin or tote in the trunk

Keeping a large canvas bin or tote in the trunk will help keep your car organized while grocery shopping or running errands. Instead of just throwing your bags in the trunk, put your purchases in the bin to keep them from rolling around and dumping out. If your items aren’t too heavy, you can simply carry the tote inside with you and unload to save on multiple trips back to the car. This post on thekitchn.com shares 10 different bin options to choose from.
