5 Thanksgiving Picture Books to Celebrate Turkey Day

Fall leaves crunch underfoot and pumpkin spice is more than just in the air—it’s everywhere you turn. Yes, there’s no escaping fall (my favorite season), especially now that November is upon us. Thanksgiving is only a few weeks away and I confess that lately, visions of turkey, mashed potatoes, and pumpkin pie have been dancing in my head. I love this time of year, not only for the food, but more because of the traditions and family time that accompany the holiday season.

With Thanksgiving in mind, here are five delightful Thanksgiving picture books that celebrate the history and traditions of Turkey Day. Adults and children alike will be captivated by these fun, insightful stories.

Balloons Over Broadway: The True Story of the Puppeteer of Macy’s Parade

Watching Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is a tradition shared by many families, mine included. I love cozying up with a blanket and hot chocolate to watch the amazing balloons, floats, and Broadway musical numbers parade down 5th Avenue. This delightful tale is the true story of Tony Sarg, a German American puppeteer and illustrator who came to be known as “America’s Puppet Master”. In 1928, Sarg and his protege built large helium-filled balloons, some up to 125 feet long, resembling various animals. These became the first, now iconic, balloons millions love to see in the annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Both you and your kids will enjoy this interesting behind-the-scenes look at a long-standing American tradition.

Thank You, Sarah : The Woman Who Saved Thanksgiving

Without Sarah Josepha Hale, the national Thanksgiving holiday we celebrate today may not be in existence. Hale is widely known for authoring the popular nursery rhyme “Mary Had a Little Lamb”, but many consider her work to establish Thanksgiving as a national holiday to be her true legacy. Hale’s advocacy began in 1846 and lasted 17 years until President Abraham Lincoln established a national holiday of Thanksgiving in 1863. This book tells Hales captivating story and explains to children how Thanksgiving as we know it do came to be.

The Thanksgiving Story

This Caldecott Honor–winning picture book brings the story of the first Thanksgiving to life in vivid detail. Giles, Constance, and Damaris Hopkins travel to the New World as pilgrims on the Mayflower. Their little brother Oceanus is born on the ship during their passage. When they arrive in the New World, their colony endures sickness, hunger, and harsh elements, but thanks to the Native Americans they might just make it through their first year in the new land. This historical account is sure to be a family favorite that will be cherished for years to come.

Tuyet is excited for Thanksgiving and a break from school but there’s just one problem. Her Vietnamese American family is having duck instead of turkey. What will her friends and classmates think? When she returns to school after the holiday, Tuyet discovers her classmates’ main dishes ranged from lambs to enchiladas. This story exposes kids to different cultures and reinforces the most important element of holidays and traditions—spending time with family.

Then give them pieces of paper in one color and ask them to write down a thing they’re grateful for. Store the boxes when Thanksgiving’s over and bring them back out for the next year’s Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving Day Walk or Run

Many cities host a Turkey Trot or a similar running or walking event on the day of Thanksgiving. It could be a fun tradition for you and your family to get together and walk or run before getting together for a big, filling dinner. If your area doesn’t have anything like this, you could find a nice hike in your area and enjoy the fall foliage together before sitting down to eat at home.

For even more fun, you could all dress up for the special day and show off your outfits at the walk or run. For example, this threesome went all out and dressed up as pilgrims and a turkey. Or you could do something simpler and make t-shirts for everyone to wear. Whatever you decide to do, have fun with it.

Thanksgiving Table Runner

Grab a plain table runner or cut one from fabric. Ask your kids to paint their hand and put it on the runner. Add their names and the year and have fun turning the hand prints into little turkeys. Pull it out the following Thanksgiving and have your kids do the same thing. It’ll be fun to see their little hands grow throughout the years until the table runner is all filled up!

Fall Scavenger Hunt

Doing a fall scavenger hunt as a family could be a fun Thanksgiving tradition before dinner or a way to burn off full stomachs after eating. Go to a nearby park with a fall scavenger hunt list and either do it together or compete in teams. Here’s a free printable, but you can always create your own list based on the things that you have in your area or park.

Book of Thanks

Get a book with blank pages and call it the “Book of Thanks” or whatever name you want to give to it. Every year just before dinner, take a group picture of everyone and save a spot for it in the book. On the pages, have every guest write what they’re thankful for that year. Print out the picture and put it in the middle of the pages. The next year, do the same thing and so on, so you can look back on it and see who got together which year and what everyone was thankful for. Such a nice memento!

10 Fun Halloween Games for Kids - tipsaholic, #Halloween, #halloweengames, #kidgames, #games1. Pumpkin Toss Game – All you need is a cardboard box and some poster board to create this fun target toss game.  Use orange ping pong balls or tennis balls for ammunition – or if you’re playing outside you could even use tiny pumpkins!

10 Fun Halloween Games for Kids - tipsaholic, #Halloween, #halloweengames, #kidgames, #games2. Ghost Cup Stack – Turn inexpensive plastic cups into ghosts with a black sharpie!  It takes literally seconds.  Then you can play the game one of two ways.  Divide into teams and race to see which team can stack their cups into a pyramid the fastest, OR use a beanbag to try and knock the stack down!  (The link above has tons more ghost party ideas for you as well.)

10 Fun Halloween Games for Kids - tipsaholic, #Halloween, #halloweengames, #kidgames, #games3. Skeleton Scavenger Hunt – The scavenger hunt described at the link used plastic skeletons broken into pieces and hidden around the neighborhood, then snapped back together as they were found.  But you could do the exact same thing using cardstock skeletons you’ve created yourself and hiding them anywhere you’d like.  Then use tape to put the bones together.

10 Fun Halloween Games for Kids - tipsaholic, #Halloween, #halloweengames, #kidgames, #games4. Unwrap the Mummy – This is pretty popular as a birthday party game (minus the mummy theme) and kids love it!  Wrap up Halloween toys and candy in a roll of toilet paper, glue on googly eyes and let the kids at it!  Each child takes a turn unwrapping until they discover a prize, then pass it to the next child who continues.  Everyone wins!

10 Fun Halloween Games for Kids - tipsaholic, #Halloween, #halloweengames, #kidgames, #games5. Web Walk – Don’t tell the kids, but they’re actually learning as they play this game!  Tape off a web on your floor with painter’s tape.  Scatter spiders all throughout the web.  The kids have to walk the lines of the web and pick up all the spiders to win, but if they step off the web or fall they have to start over at the beginning!  Make it more difficult by adding “ghost” obstacles!  Encourage problem solving, critical thinking and gross motor skills!

10 Fun Halloween Games for Kids - tipsaholic, #Halloween, #halloweengames, #kidgames, #games6. Witch Hat Ring Toss – Repurpose your diving rings for this toss – which is made with paper cones and foam board.  It’s inexpensive to create and you’re kids will have a blast matching the rings to the buckles on the hat and trying to get them all!

10 Fun Halloween Games for Kids - tipsaholic, #Halloween, #halloweengames, #kidgames, #games8. Tin Can Bowling – Paint and decorate empty tin cans headed for recycling to look like Halloween monsters.  The kids can help you for even more fun crafting time!  Then set them up as bowling pins and take turns using a tennis ball to knock them all down.

16 Useful Tips on Teaching Kids to Brush and Floss

Some kids resist getting their teeth cleaned, which can be frustrating for parents. Try these tips on teaching kids to brush and floss! 16 Useful Tips on Teaching Kids to Brush and Floss at tipsaholic.com #flossing #floss #teeth #kids #brushing #teethbrushing

16 Useful Tips on Teaching Kids to Brush and Floss

You know how important it is to keep your kids’ teeth clean and healthy, even when they’re very young. However, some kids resist getting their teeth cleaned, which can be frustrating for parents. Whether you have a baby, a toddler, or a school-aged kid, you’ll find some of the tips listed here useful in teaching kids to brush and floss!

1. Allow them to brush their own teeth.

For some kids, everything is a power struggle. If this sounds like your kid, you might want to let them have the opportunity to brush their own teeth rather than always doing it yourself. You could let them brush their teeth for a while and then finish up the job for them. Or you could do the brushing first and then let them have the final round.

2. Brush your teeth while they brush theirs!

Kids love to imitate, so break out your own toothbrush and lead by example. Allow them to hold their own toothbrush and tell them to do what you do. Then if you need to brush their teeth to thoroughly clean their teeth, let them brush yours first!

3. Use colorful flossers designed for kids.

It’s never too early to learn how important flossing is. Use single flossers, in fun colors and shapes, and make it a part of your kids’ toothbrushing routine.

4. Give them a toothbrush to use on a doll.

Whether it’s a baby doll, a girl doll, or a Transformers robot, give your kids the opportunity to be in charge and clean their doll’s teeth. They’re more likely to let you brush their teeth when they’ve done the same to their little ones. You could buy a doll designed for this purpose, but you could just as easily use a doll you already have and a small toothbrush from the store.

5. Educate your kids on what happens to unbrushed teeth.

Explain that teeth can become dirty and yellow when they are not cleaned regularly. For some kids, the idea of yellowed teeth isn’t pleasant and will encourage them to take toothbrushing seriously. You could even find pictures of bad teeth online and show them. However, it’s very important not to scare them about going to the dentist by talking about drills and the sort! You don’t want them to be scared about going to the dentist. Rather, focus on the natural consequences of not brushing their teeth.

6. Make brushing their teeth a lot of fun!

Show them that it’s ok to dance and make faces while brushing their teeth! Look into the mirror together and have fun laughing and making all sorts of faces. Some kids love to growl and make animal noises as they bare their teeth to be brushed. And always make brushing their teeth sound like a FUN activity! Say things like, “Know what? It’s time to… BRUSH YOUR TEETH! YAY!”

7. Examine your kids’ teeth and tell them what you find.

To get kids to really understand the importance of brushing their teeth, you could ask them to open wide to show you their teeth. Maybe you’ll actually see some bits of food, but you can just say things that you know they’ve eaten earlier that day. “I see bacon! Did you eat broccoli today? I see some green bits! Wait a minute… is that a dragon tail? Did you eat a dragon?” After brushing, you could check again and declare it all clean.

8. Start early, even before the first tooth shows up.

Use a washcloth or a finger toothbrush to clean their gums and however many teeth they have. Alternatively, you could give them a handheld “toothbrush” that has a protective ring that prevents them from sticking it too far down their throat. This will help them become familiar with using a toothbrush from an early age. Make sure you take your turn, though, so they are used to you “brushing” their teeth. You could start doing this when your baby turns 6 months old, since this is usually when babies start to eat.

Try these tips on teaching kids to brush and floss! 16 Useful Tips on Teaching Kids to Brush and Floss at tipsaholic.com #flossing #floss #teeth #kids #brushing #teethbrushing9. Try brushing your child’s teeth when he’s asleep.

Maybe you’ve tried everything, but your child just refuses to let you brush their teeth. Some dentists actually recommend parents to brush their children’s teeth when they are asleep. Obviously, this method works better with kids who are heavy sleepers.

10. Let kids choose their own toothbrush.

These days, you can find toothbrushes in all colors, sizes, shapes, and with fun characters on them. Many kids also love electric toothbrushes, so encourage your kids to try those!

11. Read books about brushing teeth.

Some kids learn best through reading, so try checking out a couple of books from the library or purchasing a great book on oral hygiene that your child can refer to again and again. Check out this fun pop-up book, this rhythmic board book, this book that warns about sugar bugs,  or this book with a great title that was written by a dentist.

12. Use a toothbrushing app.

Yes, technology has found its way into all aspects of our lives, including over the sink! There are apps that may help your child become more motivated to brush her teeth. Lulu Brush Time includes a timer, a cute character, and badges for good brushing habits.

13. Use a wash and brush timer.

If you’d rather not bring a smartphone into a wet area, try a wash and brush timer. This timer also includes a nightlight, making it easy for your kids to find the bathroom during middle-of-the-night nature calls!

It’ll take only a minutes of your time to whip up a couple of colorful and glittery DIY toothbrush timers for each of your kids! Shake up these timers and have your kids brush as long as the glitter moves around. When everything is settled at the bottom (after around two minutes), your kids can stop brushing their teeth.

15. Take your child with you to the dentist.

If your young child can sit through a dentist cleaning, have them come with you! Have the dentist talk about how important it is to keep teeth clean and your child can watch and see how teeth are cleaned. What an educational experience!

16. Do an egg experiment to teach about oral hygiene.

This egg experiment is really cool and will teach your kids the effects of coffee and soda on the teeth and how brushing teeth will help clean and protect the teeth. Let kids come to their conclusions as they see the changes on the egg shells! And here’s many more activity ideas that teach kids about teeth!

If the basic curling tutorial has you a little overwhelmed, try this technique and curl your hair in four different sections. Simply pin two sections up while draping the bottom two over either of your shoulders and curl one portion at a time. Give your hair a little shake to blend all four sections when you finish.

3. Curl and twist

You may have a problem getting your curls to really stick. Aside from using some good hair products, this method might get you what you need. Curl your hair the way you normally would but twist each curl while it’s still hot and bobby pin them to your head as you go. Let them cool completely and then let them down and give them a good shake and a little hairspray.

Overnight braids are the old-fashioned way to get waves and there isn’t anything quite like them. You can try one braid, two braids, or several braids depending on what size waves you prefer. French braids will give you waves all the way to the top of your hair but basic braids get great results too.

9. Flat-iron curls

Here’s another way to get waves in a hurry! Separate slightly damp hair into several sections (more if your hair is thick) and braid each one. Blow the braids dry, use a straightener to heat them one at a time, then let them loose.

Coloring your hair is a great way to update your look, and there are so many options available from blonde, to red, to brunette and back again. But have you ever considered dyeing your hair a color that was a little less natural? Get ready to try something new – a rainbow of hair colors are available and trending!

  1. Lavender hair

Give up your boring color routine and try something new with one of these creative trendy hair colors! Subtle or stunning, there's a color for everyone. 7 Unnaturally Trend Hair Colors to Try ~ Tipsaholic.com #hair #color

Kelly Osbourne and a few other celebs started the trend on this one. A light purple that some call lavender, others lilac, it goes well with neutral makeup or a smokey eye and/or a bright lip. Miss Osbourne is often seen sporting this color with a kind of punk rock look, but it can be surprisingly sophisticated with the right hairstyle.

  1. Deeper brights that blend

If you’re up for purple hair but don’t necessarily want to bleach out a darker natural color to try it, this may be an option for you. Deep purples (or blues, or any color you love!) that blend in with a darker natural color are a more subtle way to show your appreciation for creative coloring.

  1. Rose gold

Rose gold is back in the spotlight when it comes to design and fashion and is taking a new form these days – hair! Rose gold hair coloring is a light combination of blondes and reds that gives off a golden pink glow. With its warmer tones, it is a great color for summer and fall and goes well with neutral, natural makeup.

  1. Gray

Gone are the days when gray was just a reluctant color for the aging. Gray is the newest hair color to become fashionable for both young and old. There are a range of shades from light and silvery to deeper gray with highlights. Find one that works for you and run with it!

  1. Turquoise

There are many variations on this color, but it’s often referred to as turquoise or “mermaid” blue. You can find it as an all-over color, blended in, or as an ombre , and it is sometimes mixed with other brights or pastels to create fun color combos like “cotton candy.” Bright, bold makeup can be a fun match to this hair.

  1. Burgundy

Burgundy is a great color for the fall and winter months and can be altered to match warm or cool skin tones. Basically, it’s a combination of deep reds and purples that really gives hair a punch! A darker natural color can blend very well with burgundy if you’re looking for something subtle, but for more va-va-voom you may need to lighten your hair. Blondes may need to go a little darker to avoid a brighter, more purple hue but it’s a look any natural color can achieve.

  1. Vivid red

Give up your boring color routine and try something new with one of these creative trendy hair colors! Subtle or stunning, there's a color for everyone. 7 Unnaturally Trend Hair Colors to Try ~ Tipsaholic.com #hair #color

You’ve seen it before on celebrities like Rihanna and probably wondered if you could pull it off. Don’t be afraid to try! Warmer skin tones look great in this color but it looks fabulous against a very light skin as well. A nude lip or a bold red that matches the vibrancy of the hair color are a perfect match when it comes to makeup.

What to Eat for Healthy Hair: 10 Nutrients for Beautiful and Shiny Locks

The secret to beautiful hair that’s healthy and strong is not in the salon or the drug store. It’s actually in the grocery store! When you include certain foods that are high in nutrients that promote hair health to your diet, you’ll see an improvement in your hair (and skin and fingernails). Read on to find exactly what to eat for healthy hair!

1. Vitamin A (Beta Carotene)

Vitamin A helps your scalp to produce an oily substance, called sebum, that keeps your hair from becoming too dry. Your body can produce vitamin A when you consume foods that contain beta carotene, an antioxidant.

What to eat: Sweet potatoes. They have high levels of beta carotene, as well as vitamin B5, vitamin C, vitamin D, vitamin E, and iron.

2. Vitamin B5 (Pantothenic Acid)

Look at your hair and skincare products and you might find pantothenic acid on some of them. Pantothenic acid is also known as vitamin B5 and promotes blood flow to your scalp, which is great for hair regrowth.

What to eat: Sunflower seeds. This snack is full of great nutrients, including protein, zinc, vitamin B5, and vitamin E.

3. Vitamin C

The antioxidant vitamin C helps to strengthen the hair shaft and hair follicles. It also helps to prevent hair breakage by boosting collagen production.

What to eat: Kale. It is full of vitamin C and also contains beta carotene, vitamin B5, vitamin C, vitamin E, protein, and zinc.

4. Vitamin D

Vitamin D can help your hair grow faster and healthier. You can get it from the sun, but it’s not always safe or feasible to expose yourself to UV rays on a daily basis. You can find vitamin D in certain foods, or take a supplement.

What to eat: Mushrooms. It’s the only vegetable or fruit source for vitamin D. You can find portobello mushrooms that are fortified with vitamin D. You’ll also get vitamin B5 and zinc when you consume mushrooms.

5. Vitamin E

Vitamin E helps increase blood flow to your scalp, promoting faster hair growth. It also aids your body in the production of keratin, a vital protein for strong and healthy hair.

What to eat: Almonds. It’s also high in biotin, zinc, vitamin E, protein, and iron.

6. Protein

Protein is the building block of human hair (and much of your body). It promotes cell growth and cell repair. If you don’t eat enough protein, your hair stops growing, gets weaker, and may start falling out!

What to eat: Legumes, such as edamame, lentil, and kidney beans. They are great sources for protein, especially if you don’t eat meat. They’re also high in zinc, iron, biotin, vitamin B5, and omega-3 fatty acids.

7. Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Omega-3 fatty acids help our hair to grow and become shiny and thick. Our bodies can’t make omega-three fatty acids, so you need to find foods that are jam-packed with them.

What to eat: Salmon. Tuna, herring, and sardines are also high in omega-3 fatty acids. Salmon is an especially great choice for hair health, since it also contains vitamin D, vitamin B5, protein, and iron.

8. Zinc

When you don’t get enough zinc, hair loss and scalp problems can crop up. Prevent these hair woes by making sure that you meet your daily requirement of zinc.

What to eat: Beef. It’s packed with zinc, as well as vitamin B5, iron, and of course, protein.

9. Iron

Iron is another important nutrition that our bodies need. A lack of iron in your diet can lead to hair loss, since zinc (along with iron) help hair follicles stay healthy. Be sure to pair iron-rich food with vitamin-c rich food to help your body absorb iron efficiently.

What to eat: Spinach. The leafy greens also contains vitamin A, vitamin C, beta carotene, zinc, and protein.

10. Biotin

Many people take biotin in supplement form to help their hair grow faster and thicker. But you can definitely consume the amount of biotin that your hair needs with real food.

What to eat: Eggs, including the yolk. The yolk is where the biotin is, so make sure to include some in your omelet. Eggs are also great sources of protein, zinc, iron, vitamin D, omega-3 fatty acids, and vitamin B5.

Superfoods for Hair Health (foods that contain at least 3 nutrients that are essential for healthy hair)

There are certain foods that include more than one of these essential nutrients for fabulous hair. Try eating them more often to get even more nutrients in every bite!

  • Avocados – vitamin B5, vitamin E, vitamin C
  • trout: vitamin B5, vitamin D, protein, omega-3 fatty acids
  • pork: vitamin B5, vitamin D, iron, zinc, vitamin C, protein
  • chicken: protein, vitamin B5, zinc, vitamin A, vitamin C, iron
  • turkey: protein, vitamin B5, iron, zinc
  • broccoli: vitamin C, iron, vitamin E, beta carotene, omega-3 fatty acids, protein, zinc
  • strawberries: vitamin C, biotin, omega-3 fatty acids
  • raspberries: vitamin C, vitamin B5, biotin, vitamin E, omega-3 fatty acids
  • tomatoes: vitamin C, biotin, beta carotene, vitamin E
  • canned tuna: vitamin D, protein, iron, omega-3 fatty acids
  • tofu: vitamin D (fortified), vitamin E, protein, iron, zinc, omega-3 fatty acids
  • walnuts: omega-3 fatty acids, biotin, vitamin E, vitamin B5, iron, zinc
  • pumpkin seeds: iron, protein, zinc, omega-3 fatty acids

Cook yourself a good breakfast with sweet potatoes topped with an egg or two. Snack on mixed nuts that include almonds and sunflower seeds. Then for lunch, enjoy a kale and spinach salad with salmon. Finally, for dinner, nosh on steak tacos with mushrooms and black beans on the side. That’s definitely a good hair day!

How to Protect Your Hair From Summer Damage

We love the sun, the pool, and the beach during the summer, but all these are very bad for our hair. Find out how to protect your hair from summer damage! How to Protect Your Hair From Summer Damage via tipsaholic.com #hair #hairitis #summer #sundamage #hairdamage

Everything that we love about summer — the sun, the pool, and the beach — is, unfortunately, very bad for our hair. Protect your hair from summer damage by taking some precautions and dedicating a few minutes to your hair before and after participating in summer fun. Check out the hair protecting tips below!

How to Protect Your Hair From the Sun

You probably already know that the sun can lighten your hair with prolonged exposure. But this is actually proof of the damaging effects of the sun on your hair! Your skin protects itself from the sun by getting darker, while your hair is already dead and cannot protect itself. Hair that is damaged by the sun will become more coarse and get tangled easy. It’ll also dry out and become brittle. You’ll need to step in and take action to protect your hair, especially if you’re vacationing somewhere near the equator! Here’s how:

  • Cover up your hair is the easiest way to protect your hair from the sun. A large sun hat always works, but you could also wear a pretty head scarf to wrap up your hair or even a turban!
  • Apply sunscreen to your hair. Yes, you can use your sunscreen on your hair. Mix three teaspoons of sunscreen with 1 1/2 cups of water in a spray bottle. Shake and spritz! You can also purchase sunscreen specifically formulated for use on the hair, like this one.
  • Since the sun strips moisture from your hair, you can prevent sun damage by keeping your hair moisturized. Put conditioner in your hair and don’t wash it out before going out in the sun.
  • The most vulnerable part of your hair is the ends, since they are the oldest. Put your hair in an updo to protect your ends.
  • Sesame oil is a natural sunscreen and has many other benefits for your hair. It will also lock in moisture.
  • Shea butter is great for naturally dry hair types. It also has SPF in it to protect your hair from damaging sun rays.

How to Protect Your Hair From Chloride

Chloride may keep pools clean, but it can wreck havoc on your hair. The disinfectants in chloride works by breaking down and removing dirt, bacteria, and oil in the pool. We naturally produce some oils in our hair to maintain moisture and to protect it. Regular exposure to chloride will dry out hair and make it more porous and susceptible to further damage. If you love going to the pool, try these tips to protect your hair from chloride:

  • Wet your hair before jumping into the pool. Some pools have showers, so be sure to give your hair a rinse. Your hair is like a sponge — it’ll soak up water when it gets wet. You want it to be saturated with clean water so it’ll be “full” before you go into the pool, so the pool water won’t be able to enter your hair shaft. If your pool doesn’t have a shower, bring a small bottle of water and wet your hair with it.
  • Put your hair up and wear a hat or scarf and try not to get your hair wet or minimize the amount of chloride that gets on your hair.
  • Always rinse your hair after swimming. Just a simple water rinse will do wonders; using a clarifying shampoo and then a deep conditioner is even better.
  • Try an apple cider vinegar rinse after swimming to remove chloride deposits.
  • If you’re an avid swimmer, you should probably seriously consider using a swimming cap to protect your hair. Add olive oil to your hair before putting on the cap, or a deep conditioner.
  • Lots of swimming can lead to green hair, especially if your hair is bleached. If that happens to you, try dissolving aspirin in water and then rinse your hair with it.
  • Do not ever, ever, ever, ever go get your hair done at a salon without washing your hair completely after swimming! The combination of chloride and salon chemicals can lead to a hair disaster.

How to Protect Your Hair From Ocean Water

Salt water is very good for your skin, but not so much for your hair. The high salt content in beach water can strip moisture out of hair, causing it to be dry, brittle, rough-feeling, tangled, dull, and hard to comb. Follow these tips to protect your hair from salt water:

  • Do a pre-shampooing conditioning treatment, like this one, before going to the beach.
  • A leave-in conditioner that’s specialized for swimming will help your hair retain moisture. A spray formula, like this one, would be easy to put in your beach bag so you can put it on right before enjoying the beach waves.
  • After swimming, treat your hair with a “hair mask” that includes warm honey and buttermilk. Watch this video to learn how to make it yourself!

Go out and swim and enjoy the sun this summer! As long as you take the above precautions, your hair will remain healthy and beautiful. Do you have any other hair care tips for the swimming season?
