20 Tips for Coloring Your Hair at Home

Don't have the time or funds to go to the salon for a hair dye job? Check out these 20 tips for coloring your hair at home, as well as some great tutorials. 20 Tips for Coloring Your Hair at Home via @tipsaholic #coloring #haircolor #haircoloring #hair

Going to the salon to dye your hair is definitely the smart thing to do, and oh-so-relaxing, but not everyone has the money or time to see a professional on a regular basis. If this sounds like you, yet you want to dye or highlight your hair, you can. Check out these 20 tips for coloring your hair at home, as well as some truly useful and informative tutorials.

1. Always wear gloves and an old shirt. Protect your hands and your clothes!

2. Put moisturizer on your face and petroleum jelly around your hairline before dyeing your hair. This protects your face from dye marks.

3. Don’t wash your hair before dyeing your hair. Unwashed hair will be better able to hold on the color and the natural oils will help protect the scalp.

4. Try buying products at a beauty supply store. Talk with the employees there; they really do know their stuff and can give you advice for your hair and help you achieve the exact results you want.

5. Choose a color that compliments your skin. Warmer tones work well for those with paler skin, while ashy or cooler tones are better for those with olive to darker skin tones.

6. A mousse formula will give you a translucent, shimmery hair color dye job, while a liquid color formula will give you a more opaque result.

7. Always do the strand test. The strand test will help you figure out how long you need to leave the dye on your hair to get the results you want and to ensure that you don’t get an allergic reaction. If you don’t, you might end up with a whole head of hair that isn’t good enough and might have been so much better with just five extra minutes… or worse, a really bad allergic reaction!

8. Use an application brush, like the professionals do. Using your fingers can result in a splotchy, uneven hair color.

9. Going blonde with box dye kits? Try mixing two different box dye kits with the same levels and different tones to get a natural-looking shade of blonde. Here’s more details on how to do that.

10. Choose a highlighting kit that’s labeled for your hair color instead of picking one with the color you want. For example, if you have brown hair, you’ll want a kit that says “for brown hair” to get good results.

11. Don’t use the plastic cap in highlighting kits. Use an adult toothbrush for the front of your hair and a baby toothbrush for the back for a more natural look. Small paintbrushes in varying sizes would work, too.

12. Don’t highlight to the roots right next to your face. Take a thin section of your hairline and pull it out. This helps your dye or highlight job look more natural.

13. When highlighting, don’t put the dye all the way onto the scalp. The color can spread and highlight areas you don’t want lightened.

14. Do your roots last when lightening your hair, since the heat on your scalp will speed up the bleaching process.

15. If you lighten your hair at home and end up with a too-yellow or too-orange blond hair, use a toner to correct the color. A violet toner will help remove yellow tones and a blue toner is great for removing orange tones.

16. When going from light blonde hair to darker hair, you need to prepare your hair with a filler color first. Trying to go from blonde to brown can give you a weird color. Read this article to learn how to do that… and you’ll also find loads of other great advice for dyeing your hair at home in that article.

17. Coat your hair in coconut oil before bleaching your hair for best results. Here’s how.

18. Always deep-condition after dyeing your hair.

19. Fix botched hair dye jobs with a hair color remover product, such as Color Oops.

20. Try these three great tutorials on doing your hair at home:

  • Give your hair an ombre treatment! Try this easy and simple tutorial, or this more exhaustive one. An ombre hair dye job could be a great way to test out a home dyeing kit to see if it works for your hair and to play with the waiting times, especially if you’re going to get a trim soon.
  • Highlight your hair at home with foils and the help of a friend with this excellent highlighting tutorial.

Good luck and may you end up with a perfect DIY hair dye job!

5 Reasons to Go Short

Still undecided about whether or not to cut your luscious locks? Here are 5 excellent reasons you may want to give a short haircut a try. 5 Reasons to Go Short - Tipsaholic. #shorthair, #haircut, #hairstyle, #hair

Chopping off your hair can be a monumental decision.  Long hair is seen as a feminine trait – one that is often considered sexy and alluring.  It can also be a woman’s security blanket, how she identifies as beautiful, or simply something that feels as necessary as any appendage.  Taking scissors to your mane may require courage, but there are some definite advantages to having short locks.  If you’ve been toying with the idea of transitioning to a bob or going all out with a face framing pixie, here are 6 reasons to try a short haircut.

1. Your face.  That’s right.  It’s time to show it off!  Short styles are the easiest, most assured way of displaying your facial features for all to see!  If you do a search of short hair styles online, you’ll quickly realize that nearly all face shapes are flattered by some sort of short style – whether it’s a super textured, asymmetrical crop for those with fine, delicate features or a cute pixie that slims your apple cheeks and draws attention to your eyes.  Nearly all short cuts are slimming, and with your hair literally framing your face you’ll put your best features on display.

2. Money Saver.  It’s true.  There’s no denying that a short style goes through way less shampoo, conditioner, gel, hairspray or any other hair product.  It takes a lot less upkeep and you won’t need to spend as much to make it look awesome.

3. Time Saver.  Honestly, this might be the top reason for any busy woman juggling multiple responsibilities!  You can spend an hour each morning washing and styling your long locks, and even longer for special occasions.  Short hair has a sort of carefree ease – some styles don’t even require daily styling!  If you’re looking for something that’s easy to do, different than the normal ponytail, and will take literally minutes each morning a short cut may be the way to go.

4. Changing it up.  Perhaps you’ve had the same style for 15 years.  Perhaps you’ve just encountered a major life-changing event.  Perhaps you’re just tired of of the maintenance (see above!).  Whatever the case, everyone needs a change once in a while.  Obviously, chopping your hair off might not meet that need for every individual, nor is it the only way to inject change into your lifestyle.  But it can be an amazingly freeing change that gives you a needed boost.

5. Fresh start.  Let’s face it.  Hair gets damaged.  Especially long hair.  Heat styling, curling, drying, washing, sticky products, not to mention dyeing or highlighting – it all takes its toll.  I’m not implying that you need to chop your magnificent mane to rid yourself of a few split ends, but if your hair is overly dry and damaged, a chic, sophisticated cut can give you a fresh start – much like a blank canvas.

If you chop off your hair why do you do it?

Grow These 5 Beautiful House Plants From Food Scraps
House plants add so much life and beauty to your home. They also clean your air, making your indoor air healthier for you and your family. However, they aren’t free if you buy them from a store… but they can be practically free if you grow plants from food scraps!

Lemon Tree From a Lemon Seed

As long as you buy organic lemons, you can grow a gorgeous lemon tree from a lemon seed! Here’s how. Don’t expect your lemon tree to grow any fruit for three to five years, but in the meantime you’ll have a pretty tree that adds a lot of charm and fresh air to your home.

You can grow similar trees from the seeds of oranges, limes, and grapefruits!

Avocado Tree From an Avocado Pit

Grow another tree for your home with an avocado pit! This would make for a great science experiment to do with the kiddos, since you’ll need to suspend the pit in water and watch the roots and stem grow. Try this with several avocado pits and choose the most thriving seed to turn into a houseplant. Again, don’t expect it to produce anything, but you never know!

Sweet Potato Vine From a Sweet Potato

Bought too many sweet potatoes and have one or two left over? Turn them into vine houseplants with purplish green colored leaves! Suspend a sweet potato that’s covered with eyes in a jar of water and watch the vines grow. This is another houseplant that your kids will love watching grow!

Pineapple Plant From a Pineapple Crown

A pineapple crown can be turned into a great little spiky houseplant that resembles an aloe vera plant. It takes years for one to grow a pineapple, if at all. If a red flower starts growing at the top, get ready to watch a mini pineapple grow on the top of the plant!

Carrot Foliage From Carrot Tops

Cut off the tops of carrots and put them in water and you’ll get sweet little delicate plants growing on the tops. Plant them in a pot and enjoy your new houseplant! This is another great project for the kids.

A great way to spend a warm summer night is to host an outdoor movie night in your backyard. With just a little planning, you and your friends could have great fun under the stars. Here are 3 tips for you to get the party started.

  1. The equipment needed is fairly simple. First, you need a movie screen. If you already have a light colored garage door or wall of your house, you have a surface to display the movie. But if you need to make a movie screen, a simple white bed sheet tacked to a wall or fence will work great. Next, you will need a projector and some kind of speakers. If you don’t have these maybe you can borrow from a friend, or they can easily be rented. Also, you need a video source like a laptop computer or a dvd player. Simply set it all up on a table, aim it at your make shift movie screen and you are all set.
  2. What would a backyard movie night be like without snacks? Set up a concession stand on a table. Keep everything in individual portions, so everyone can easily grab what they want to eat before heading over to watch the movie. Pop a lot of popcorn before guests arrives and put it in decorative popcorn bags you can get at most party supply stores. Prop them up in a box or tray, so guest can select a bag of popcorn. Also, include candy you would normally find at a movie theater or bake up a sweet treat like brownies or cupcakes. Don’t forget the drinks either. Put those in a tub full of ice, to keep them nice and cool.
  3. Comfy seating is a must. Provide a variety of options. Set out a few folding chairs, lay out blankets on the ground, and spread out a few seat cushions from the patio set.

Once you have everything set up, it is time to start the movie and enjoy a backyard movie night with your friends.

6 Fun Family Campfire Traditions

If you love a crackling summer campfire, you'll love these ideas for creating campfire traditions and lasting memories with your family! 6 Fun Family Campfire Traditions - @Tipsaholic #traditions, #familyfun, #kids, #summer

campfire title
It’s the perfect time of year to enjoy a crackling outdoor fire.  Whether you’re planning a camping trip or just like to cozy up around a backyard fire-pit, campfires can be great fun for everyone!  Chances are you’ve got some of your own campfire traditions you like to do as a family, but there are always more ways to get the kids involved.  Up the entertainment value of your campfires with these fun family traditions!

1. Ghost Stories.  We’ve all heard about this creepy campfire activity, but have you passed it down to your own kids?  Perhaps you don’t remember the ghost stories from your youth, or you could use a little help with some new ghost stories your kids haven’t heard a thousand times!  Check out American Folklore – which has a section designated to ghost stories, one for spooky campfire stories and one for supernatural romance.  Or try these books: 50 Real American Ghost Stories and Creepy, Book 1.

2. Campfire Songs. Of course you’ve probably sung a campfire song or two in your day.  This tradition is still a great one for kids to take part in.  If you’ve gotten rusty over the years, there are a lot of sources that can help you out.  The site Songs for Teaching has a section devoted to campfire songs both silly and traditional.  Bonus: along with the written lyrics, you can also play either the vocal or piano musical tune!  If you play the guitar, you might like a book of lyrics and chords, like this one, so you can learn to play along!

3. The Great Cookout.  If you’re spending time at home during your summer vacation, you could designate a day for “The Great Cookout.”  Come up with a menu for the whole day comprised entirely of meals that can be cooked over the campfire!  If you’re sick of the age-old hot dogs and s’mores, here are some ideas for campfire breakfasts, here are more hardy meals, and here’s some sweet treats you’ll definitely want to try!  Let everyone participate in the planning process, from picking the meals, to shopping for ingredients.  Then cook together and eat outside.

4. Campfire techniques.    Use your campfire as a teaching tool for the family.  Each time you make a fire in your pit or while you’re camping, try out different techniques.  For instance, try different methods of stacking the wood to build the fire.  Did you know there are actually 9 different ways to light a fire without matches?  Try each one!  Make a few different “fire starter kits” and test them out to see which work best.  Your kids are guaranteed to remember all they’ve learned with you around the fire!

5. Roast new things. Sure, you’ve roasted hot dogs on a stick and probably marshmallows as well, but have you ever roasted a Starburst and eaten them when they’re bubbly and warm? Or fruit kebabs – with strawberries and pineapple?  How about roasting campfire cones or banana boats?  There are a ton of things your kids can have fun roasting, so why not switch it up and try roasting new things each time?  Here are a few savory ideas of what to roast.

6. Family Meeting.  When everyone’s gathered together around the campfire, feeling safe and cozy, it can be the perfect time to have a “family meeting.”  Your family meeting can be personalized to your family’s needs – there are so many ways to incorporate this idea.  You could have each person take a turn talking about the positive things that happened that week.  Or let each person talk about something that’s bothering them and come up with solutions together.  Or you could incorporate a religious devotional into your campfire night.  Let someone else plan a message or scripture each time you gather by the campfire.  Another possibility is to take turns having each person talk about their faith and what they believe in.  You may even want to incorporate a “talking stick” to pass around – when someone holds the stick, it’s their turn to share!
