The 5 Steps of Simplified Home Decorating

Spend more time doing the things you love and less time maintaining your decor with these 5 steps to simplified home decorating. The 5 Steps of Simplified Home Decorating via @tipsaholic #home #decor #homedecor #interiordesign #simplify

simplified home decorating

If you’re a believer in the principal of “less is more,” you may have already looked into making lifestyle changes that will leave more time for the things in life you really value. But have you considered making changes to your home décor? Test the waters of a simpler style by using these minimalist home decorating basics to pare down the unnecessary in your house and maximize your free time.

1. Define the purpose

In a simplified home, every room and space has a defined purpose. If your bathroom is housing your pile of laundry or your living room has become a toy bin, it’s time to make a change. Decide what each room’s function will be. Within the room, decide what spaces and surfaces will house which items. If you’ve allowed your bedside table to become a desk with discarded mail and pens, clear the surface and start fresh. Give each item a specific place in the house.

2. Minimize clutter

The second thing that needs to be taken care of when simplifying your décor is cutting back on clutter so that there are fewer things to find “homes” for in a room. The less you own, the less you’ll need in the way of storage baskets, bins, and shelves. Keep the things that will add the most to your theme or style. Keep things that can be used throughout the year so that you don’t need to worry about swapping them with the seasons. Keep things that serve a purpose.

3. Minimize furniture

Do you really need two end tables plus a coffee table? Two bookshelves? Now that you’ve cut back on possessions, you probably don’t need as many surfaces and places to store them. Keep what is functional and adds to the style you are trying to convey and consider getting rid of the rest.

4. Make a statement

Just because you’re purging the extra stuff doesn’t mean your home has to be empty and boring. Rather than having many smaller items that take lots of time to clean and swap when seasons change, use a few larger ones to make your style statement. Bright colors, interesting pieces of furniture, rich textures, and large pieces of art are foundational in a simplistic style.

5. Don’t be afraid of space

Once you’ve cleared your home of the unnecessary, you may find it feels a little bare. Don’t let it scare you! Keep the space. You have more room now! More room to breathe, to move, to invite friends over. And you’ll have more time too, because you’ve already removed the things that needed constant organizing, dusting, and cleaning out. Fill this new space in your home and your schedule with fun, family, friends, and living a life you love.

5. Toss your paper clutter into a tray.

One of the secrets to controlling paper clutter is to go through your mail as soon as you bring it into your home. Have a tray ready in your entryway, your kitchen, or your office to hold the documents that you need to follow through with.

10 Closet Office Ideas: How to Create an Office Space You’ll Love

No space for an office? How about building an office closet? Here are 10 useful closet office ideas that will maximize the space in your tiny office! 10 Closet Office Ideas: How to Create an Office Space You’ll Love via tipsaholic.com #office #closet #officespace #officeideas #homeoffice

10 Closet Office Ideas How to Create an Office Space You’ll Love
A great closet office saves space in your home and makes great use of a closet that might otherwise go unused or be filled with random junk. Here are 10 closet office ideas that will help you use every inch in effective ways to maximize your space!

1. Install light sconces or overhead lighting to save space on your desk.

Desk space is limited in a closet office; don’t crowd it with a lamp. Instead, put up a light sconce or two to get the lighting you need as you work without sacrificing desktop space.

A great overhead light would work just as well if you prefer that look! An overhead light would also save your wall space if you wanted to add more shelves and bulletin boards.

2. Use the sides of your closet for extra shelving.

You’ll probably focus on adding shelving and art to the back wall, but don’t forget about the sides of your closet office. Add shelves for even more storage.

3. Make your closet office do double duty by raising the hanging bar so you can hang clothes or coats above your desk.

If you have limited space in your home and still need your closet office to function as a closet, this office closet idea might be a great solution for you. This would be perfect for a closet office in a guest room.

Pegboards are organizational workhorses and look so pretty when painted in your favorite color. They are especially useful for a crafting and/or sewing closet office.

5. Use the doors to your closet office as extra wall space for organization.

Some closet offices work well with the closet doors removed, but consider leaving the doors to gain even more wall surface space to organize office supplies, file paperwork, or to hold a calendar.

6. Add curtains to the bottom of your desktop to conceal more storage.

Don’t forget about all the space under your desk; you could put filing cabinets, baskets, boxes, and so much more in all that space. However, all that stuff can start to look cluttered. A simple solution is to add fabric, like a curtain, to cover everything up.

7. Remove the header from your closet to open up the space.

This will give you more access to vertical space and your closet office will look more like a nook and less like a closet. Then you could add more shelving up there and maximize your space even more.

8. Get creative with finding a desk solution for your closet office: try a MDF or plywood board, two cabinets topped by a desk top, or a charming, tiny desk.

There are so many different ways to incorporate a desk in your closet office; the best desk for you depends on how you want to use your office. If you need a large desk that spans the entire length of the closet, try adding supports along all the walls and topping it off with a piece of MDF or plywood. Here’s a good tutorial on how to do that.

9. Add cabinets for extra concealed storage.

Many closet offices include shelves on the main wall, but another idea to consider is to use cabinets instead. They can hold a lot more and you can close the doors anytime to cover up all the stuff. Add pretty knobs and maybe a coat of paint to personalize it.

10. Think about providing access for your electronics when designing your closet office.

If you’re like most people, you’ll work on your laptop, computer, or sewing machine in your closet office. All these things need to be plugged in, so don’t forget about that important aspect when you’re building your closet office. You could install an outlet right inside the closet for the most convenience – here’s a tutorial on how to do that – or hire an electrician to do that for you.

Also, you might want to drill a hole on the top of your desk to feed through your electrical outlets.

Read on to learn about 5 ways to decorate your walls with paint pens!

1. Freehand It!

If you have some artistic skills, you could just freehand a design on a wall to make your room pop! You could look at wallpaper designs and get inspired by one or two and create a similar pattern on your walls, like Kellie did on her hallway walls. So great!

And one of Kellie’s readers did a similar wall treatment with a paint pen and her walls turned out just as beautiful.

Another great freehand design done with paint pens is this modern faux stone accent wall. Monica sketched out her design with a pencil on the wall first and then traced it all with a black paint pen.

So, if you’re not totally confident at freehand designs, you could easily test out any design you want by sketching it out with a pencil beforehand.

2. Use a Pre-made Stencil

Another way to decorate your walls with a paint pen is to purchase a pre-made stencil and use a paint pen instead of paint! It’ll be a much less messy project and the results are more delicate.

Sometimes a beautiful pattern on just one wall can bring a room from blah to gorgeous. Read on to learn about 5 ways to decorate your walls with paint pens! 5 Ways to Decorate Your Walls With Paint Pens via @tipsaholic #paint #walls #pens #paintpens #decorate #diy

If you want to go this route, check out the amazing selection of stencils at Royal Design Studio.

3. Create Your Own Stencil or Template

Of course, you can always create your own stencil or template instead of buying one! A Beautiful Mess created a fun stencil with cardboard and cut it out with an x-acto knife.  They made sure that the pattern was interlocking and used push pins to hold the stencil on the wall as they drew away.

Instead of making a stencil, Wendy created a template based on a pattern on a fabric she liked and traced around that with a pencil. Then she went back and went over the lines with a paint pen.

It’s probably best to decide the pattern and design of your walls before deciding whether to create a stencil or a template. Or you could just use something around the house as a template, like Savannah did! She used a steamer pot lid, of all things, to create this beautiful scalloped accent wall.

4. Measure Out a Geometric Design

No matter how you feel about math, you have to admit that it does amazing things in our world. It can create bridges and advanced technology, predict human behavior, and help you design a beautiful accent wall.

With some measuring and creativity, you can come up with a design that you can sketch out with a paint pen. Mandi used a level and a ruler to create horizontal lines and then did some more measuring to draw her triangles. Her finished accent wall is a beaut!

Here’s another example of a geometric accent wall created with paint pens that was done by Becky for her son’s nursery.

Again, a ruler and a level was all that she used to create her accent wall. She also planned out the design in Photoshop, so that might be a good route for you if you have that program or a similar one.

A simple, diagonal design with a gold metallic paint pen is unexpectedly gorgeous! And it can be done easily with just a little measuring and a long, straight ruler. Julia’s bathroom turned out beautifully using this method.

5. Use a Projector

You can use paint pens to draw a huge mural on a wall instead of a pattern. Amanda made this great world map mural for her son’s room with an overhead projector.

If you don’t have an overhead projector, you could ask your local library if they loan them out or get an image projector. The options for a mural is limitless — you could draw your own design, create one in Photoshop, print out a photo from the internet, or trace an image from a book.

The best thing about using paint pens to create an accent wall is that it is a VERY cheap project that has a big impact. A paint pen usually costs around $3 and you can find them at craft stores. Just be sure to buy latex, or water-based, paint pens so you can easily cover them up with paint without having to use primer when you tire of the design.

Fabric Wallpaper: 15 Helpful Tips From Experienced DIYers

Fabric wallpaper is a great way to decorate the walls in your home! If you want to try using fabric as wallpaper, here are 15 tips for DIY fabric wallpaper! Fabric Wallpaper 15 Helpful Tips From Experienced DIYers at tipsaholic.com #diy #fabric #wallpaper #tips #homedecor #decor

Fabric Wallpaper 15 Helpful Tips From Experienced DIYers
Fabric wallpaper is a great way to decorate the walls in your home! It’s cheaper than most wallpaper, relatively simple to install, and easily removed when it’s time. If you’re seriously considering covering a wall or two in your home with fabric wallpaper, read on for some handy tips on how to apply fabric wallpaper.

Three experienced DIYers, Emily of Emily A. Clark, Stephanie of Cre8tive Designs, and Sherry of Young House Love all tried the fabric wallpaper in their homes and shared their results and tips on their blogs. Here are their best tips all in one place for you!

Emily put up a beautiful chinoiserie toile fabric in her daughters’ bedroom using liquid starch. First, she rolled the wall with the liquid starch and then put the fabric on the wall. After pressing out all the wrinkles, she did another coat of starch on top.

Stephanie created an accent wall in her guest room with a bold yellow fabric with liquid starch. She put up the fabric panel by panel — she rolled a section of the wall with liquid starch and then rolled the liquid on the back of one fabric panel, and then put that up on the wall. Then she did the same thing for the next panel and so on.

Sherry covered a wall in her daughter’s bedroom closet in a whimsical floral fabric with only a staple gun and some fabric glue. She held up the fabric and stapled along the edges of the wall, starting at a top corner and working her way down.

Their fabric wallpapers are gorgeous, but they did encounter some trial and error in completing their projects. This is a good thing for you, since you can learn from their useful tips!

  • Use a busy fabric for your fabric wallpaper so it’s harder to see the seams.
  • Choose the right fabric for this project. Home decorator fabrics are great, 100% cotton fabric is a good idea. Velvet fabric is too heavy and silk fabric will leave behind water marks if you’re using liquid starch.
  • There are many wallpaper calculators on the internet, such as this one. You can use these calculators to help you figure out how much fabric to buy.
  • Buy a few extra yards of fabric in case you make some mistakes.
  • Heavily textured walls might not work well with liquid starch. You could try sanding down the walls before starching.
  • Remove the face plates of outlets and light switches before putting up the fabric.
  • Get someone to help you if possible; an extra set of hands is so useful in holding up and positioning the fabric.
  • Use thumb tacks to hold up the fabric as you roll on the liquid starch or staple away.
  • Use a broad knife or wallpaper brush to quickly smooth out fabric and press it on the wall, especially in the corners. If you don’t want to buy a new tool, a piece of stiff cardboard works. This is for the liquid starch method.
  • If the starch dries and the fabric doesn’t adhere, add more liquid starch.
  • If you’re stapling the fabric to the wall, keep the fabric pulled taut as you staple.
  • Overlapping the edges of your fabric panels is easier than butting up the two edges.
  • Use a staple gun along the seams of your fabric panels if you’re using liquid starch and feel like your fabric needs the extra hold.
  • Use an x-acto knife to cut away excess fabric along the edges of the wall and around outlets. Use a brand new blade for best results.
  • Cover up the cut edges with ribbon trim. You can hold down the ribbon trim with black furniture tacks (like Emily did) or glue it with fabric glue (like Sherry did).

Thanks to these tips, it should be a pretty straightforward DIY for you that will give you amazing results! For a general idea of the costs of fabric wallpaper, it cost Emily around 170 dollars to cover her wall with 9 yards of fabric and 15 yards of ribbon. Of course, the final cost breakdown depends on your fabric choice. Find a great fabric you love on sale and you’ll pay even less for a beautiful accent wall.

Don’t want to cover a whole wall, but love the idea of using fabric on the wall? Consider fabric wall decals or covering the back of bookshelves with a pretty fabric.
