Gray hair can be tricky to cover. Since those strands often have different properties than regular hair, they can cause problems when applying hair color. But with just a little effort, it can be done. Here are five tips to cover gray hair at home.

  • Add moisture. Gray hair can become dry resulting in resistance to long lasting hair color. Prep your hair, by using a hydrating hair mask the day before you plan to color your hair at home.

  • Select the right product. Be sure to choose an at home hair color that is strong enough to counter act the resistance to color that gray hair can sometimes develop. A product that is a permanent application will better settle into the hair strands. Also, pick a hair color that is warmer with either red or golden tones since this will provide better coverage on gray strands. Stay within one to two tones of your natural hair color. Too dark a color, could make too much of a contrast with your natural skin tone.

  • Apply to hair. First be sure to read the package directions of the hair color you selected to see if any special steps need to be followed. Start by applying hair color to the grays first, this way they will have more time to absorb the color.

  • Touch up. About every six week give the gray roots a touch up with the hair color. The whole process can be repeated with the rest of the hair about every 12 weeks.

5 Reasons to Go Short

Chopping off your hair can be a monumental decision.  Long hair is seen as a feminine trait – one that is often considered sexy and alluring.  It can also be a woman’s security blanket, how she identifies as beautiful, or simply something that feels as necessary as any appendage.  Taking scissors to your mane may require courage, but there are some definite advantages to having short locks.  If you’ve been toying with the idea of transitioning to a bob or going all out with a face framing pixie, here are 6 reasons to try a short haircut.

1. Your face.  That’s right.  It’s time to show it off!  Short styles are the easiest, most assured way of displaying your facial features for all to see!  If you do a search of short hair styles online, you’ll quickly realize that nearly all face shapes are flattered by some sort of short style – whether it’s a super textured, asymmetrical crop for those with fine, delicate features or a cute pixie that slims your apple cheeks and draws attention to your eyes.  Nearly all short cuts are slimming, and with your hair literally framing your face you’ll put your best features on display.

2. Money Saver.  It’s true.  There’s no denying that a short style goes through way less shampoo, conditioner, gel, hairspray or any other hair product.  It takes a lot less upkeep and you won’t need to spend as much to make it look awesome.

3. Time Saver.  Honestly, this might be the top reason for any busy woman juggling multiple responsibilities!  You can spend an hour each morning washing and styling your long locks, and even longer for special occasions.  Short hair has a sort of carefree ease – some styles don’t even require daily styling!  If you’re looking for something that’s easy to do, different than the normal ponytail, and will take literally minutes each morning a short cut may be the way to go.

4. Changing it up.  Perhaps you’ve had the same style for 15 years.  Perhaps you’ve just encountered a major life-changing event.  Perhaps you’re just tired of of the maintenance (see above!).  Whatever the case, everyone needs a change once in a while.  Obviously, chopping your hair off might not meet that need for every individual, nor is it the only way to inject change into your lifestyle.  But it can be an amazingly freeing change that gives you a needed boost.

5. Fresh start.  Let’s face it.  Hair gets damaged.  Especially long hair.  Heat styling, curling, drying, washing, sticky products, not to mention dyeing or highlighting – it all takes its toll.  I’m not implying that you need to chop your magnificent mane to rid yourself of a few split ends, but if your hair is overly dry and damaged, a chic, sophisticated cut can give you a fresh start – much like a blank canvas.

If you chop off your hair why do you do it?

5 Up Dos

Need some new hair ideas? Try one of these 5 fun updos. Find them at @tipsaholic #hair #hairstyles #updos

5 Up Dos

For most formal occasions the up do is a must. It keeps your hair up and out of your face, allowing your outfit to shine. It can also give you a professional look when needed. Check out these five easy updos for ideas for your next event.

Top Bun Updo

This look will always be stylish and is so simple to do. Simply pull hair into a high ponytail, twist the hair around into a bun, and secure with an elastic band. No need to add another accessories or even hairspray.

French Knot Updo

This is a classic look that is perfect when a sleek, professional looking hairstyle is needed. Part hair from one side, and sweep hair to the back of the head. Then twist them to form a neat outer edge, and a rolled-inwards look from the other side. Pin in place.

Braided Loop Updo

This is a sweet, romantic look. Part hair at the top and braid each side portion of the hair into two braids. Take the rest of the hair and make into a ponytail. Fold the end of the ponytail back towards the nape of the neck, to make the hair into a large loop, and secure with an elastic band. Cross the two braids over the ponytail, and wrap the ends of the braids around the elastic bands to hide it. Secure all loose ends of the hair underneath with pins.

Twisted Reverse Updo

When you just need hair up off your neck, and want to take about 10 seconds to do it, this is perfect hairstyle. Pull hair back into a low ponytail. Then twist hair, and secure it to the crown of the head with a clip or barrette. Either leave ends loose for a messy look, or tuck them under the hair and pin for something more polished.

Rolled Updo

Gather hair in a low ponytail with an elastic band placed about an inch lower than normal. Part the hair in half right above the elastic band. Flip the ponytail through, and then pull the end back up and tuck right above the elastic band. Pin in place to secure.

5 Braid Hairstyles

If you have medium to long hair there are so many ways to wear your hair. An easy and intricate way to do your hair is with braids. Here are 5 Braids to try. 5 Braids Hairystyles via tipsaholic.com #braids #hair #hairstyles

5 Braid Hairstyles

The braided hairstyle is making a comeback. The best part is it keeps long hair from turning into fly away hair, while adding sophistication to any hairstyle. So channel your inner Katniss Everdeen and check out these 5 braid hairstyles.

Multi-Braided Bun

Section hair and create four braids, two braids using hair from the sides, starting at the top, and two braids from the bottom middle portion of the hair. Simply wrap one of the middle section braids into a bun, and then twist the other middle braid around the bun. Take the two side braids and add them to the bun, leaving a portion of the two braids visible along the sides of the head. Secure the bun with bobby pins.

Braid Integrated into a Bun

Divide hair into a front and back section. Gather the back section into a ponytail and secure with an elastic band. Take one section of the front portion of hair and two sections of hair from the ponytail and braid it together. Continue braiding and added in more sections of hair from the ponytail and the front portion as the hair curves around the head into a large bun. Finish braiding any hair left and tuck into the bun. Add a pin to keep the ends in place.

Wrap Around Braid

Braid the sides of hair on both sides. Leave the rest of the hair down. Add a few soft curls for a romantic vibe. Cross the two braids around the back of the head, tuck the ends under and pin into place.

Fishtail Braid

Separate hair into two sections. Take a skinny piece of hair from the outside of one section of hair, and cross it over to the other section of hair. Merge the skinny piece with the hair; do not leave it separate. Next take another skinny piece of hair from the outside of the other section of hair, and move it together with the first section of hair. The skinny pieces should now look like an x in the hair. Repeat until the braid is complete.

Waterfall Braid

This creates a braid around the head with the rest of the hair remaining down. Starting near your hairline on one side begin with three piece of hair like you are going to do a French braid. Braid the hair for about a few inches then drop the middle piece to hang down with the rest of your hair, at about your part line grab another piece of hair to replace it. Repeat braiding a few inches, dropping a piece of hair to blend in with the rest of your hair, replacing it with another piece of hair, and continuing. When you get to your opposite ear, do a normal braid for about an inch, and then secure in place with a bobby pin.

5 Work Hairstyles

The office often calls for a certain look. You have the right outfit to project that professional image. And of course the shoes need to be perfect. But to complete the look, you often need the right hairstyle. Here are 5 work hairstyles to keep you looking great while doing your job.

Decorative Twist

This style works best with either thin or shorter hair. Gather hair together. Twist and tuck hair into an informal chignon. Secure with a few decorative hair accessories to complete the look.

Looped Bun

And for those of you with longer hair, try out this hairstyle. Create a high ponytail and secure with an elastic band about an inch lower than normal. Part hair right above the elastic band, and flip the ponytail through. Fold the ponytail in half into a loop and secure the ends with pins against the head, underneath the top fold of hair. Make sure the hair stays sleek by adding some hairspray.

Long Ponytail

This hairstyle keeps the hair off your face, but still allows your hair to have a little flow. Create two ponytails one high on the head and one closer to the nape of the neck, one directly above the other. Make some soft curls in the hair to add volume and texture. From the back, this will make your hair seem much longer than it really is.

Side Braid

This one is fast and easy. Make a haphazard part in your hair. Braid hair to one side of your head, and secure with an elastic band at the bottom. Pull out a few face framing features to add to the style.

Long and Straight

Sometime simplest is best. Simply leaving hair down could be the best way to go. To keep it professional, avoid out of control curls, and keep the look polished and straight. The use of a flat iron could be a benefit for this style.

We can all use a little help simplifying our morning routines.  Sometimes, all you have is a few minutes to get out the door.  Fortunately, with these simple and easy hairstyles, minutes are all you need to whip your hair into shape!  Try one of these ideas and you’ll look great in no time flat.

1. Knot a Ponytail

Step up the always go-to style – the ponytail – by adding just a little something. Simply gather your hair into a ponytail at the base of the neck, separate it into two pieces, tie them into two knots toward the base, and secure hair after the knots with a clear elastic band.

2. Reverse with a Twist

This is the perfect style when you need your hair in an up-do, quickly. Gather your hair into a ponytail at the back of your head, then twist it repeatedly while pulling the hair up toward the crown of your head.  Secure on the top of your head with a clip, leaving the ends free for a slightly messy look.

3. Bun in a Hurry

Here’s a classic style that looks polished, but only takes five minutes. Twist your hair on the sides, pulling them back into a ponytail with an elastic band.  Twist the ponytail while wrapping it around in a circle, for a bun shape, then tuck the end and pin into place.

4. Beachy Waves

This is an easy way to add some style, while still leaving your hair down. Divide your hair into two sections.  Twist each portion of hair and secure the ends with elastic bands. Take your flat iron and run it over both sections of hair a few times.  Release the hair from the twists, and use your fingers to smooth hair into place.

5. Overlapping Half Up

To mimic the look of a braid in half the time, go with this hairstyle.  Grab a small section of hair on each side of your face. Pull the right side over the left side of the head and secure with a bobby pin. Do the same to the left side, putting it on the right side and pinning in place.  Repeat this as many times as you want to get the desired look.  Leave the rest of your hair down and straight.

6 Ponytails

6 Simple Ponytails ~ Tipsaholic.com

6ponytails

The quick cure for any bad hair day is always a ponytail. But just because it is a quick fix, doesn’t mean it can’t also add some serious style to your look. Here are 6 ponytails that are sure to look great. They might just become your go to look no matter what kind of day.

Inside Out Ponytail

This is the average ponytail with a twist. Gather hair back into a low ponytail and secure with an elastic band an inch or so lower on the ponytail than normal. Separate the hair right above the elastic band in half, and flip the ponytail through.

Side Lace Braid Ponytail

This creates a beautiful and romantic look. Plus is keeps all the hair out of your face, showing your face clearly. Start with braiding the front section of the hair, keeping the braid to one side of your head. Gather all the rest of the hair into a low ponytail and secure the ponytail and the braid with an elastic band.

Cute Headband with a Ponytail

This works best with a thin fabric material or elastic headband. It makes a memorable statement, and could even be used in formal occasions. Place the headband at the front of your hair, and tease the hair at the crown to add some volume. Draw the hair back low at the nape of the neck with an elastic band. Take a small piece of hair, wrap it around the band securing the ponytail to hide it, and pin the ends of the piece of the hair underneath.

Half Ponytail

This is an up-do style with only half the commitment. Start by adding soft curls to the hair. Pull the sides and top of the hair back and secure at the crown. Leave the rest of the hair down for volume and style.

French Braid Ponytail

This is a simple, but classic look. Create a French braid with your hair starting at the top and secure it at the bottom of the braid with an elastic band. Leave the ponytail portion of the hair unbraided.

Twisted Ponytail

This works best on long hair, and is perfect for keeping all strands of hair secure. Pull hair into a high ponytail with an elastic band. Pull a strand of hair over the band, and secure the ends underneath, to hide the elastic band. Twist the ponytail and secure it every couple inches with an elastic band. Clear elastic bands look best with this.

disney hair title
If there’ one thing a princess-loving girl can appreciate, it is that fabulous princess hair! Follow these detailed tutorials and learn to create some of the most memorable princess hairdo’s to date – all it takes is a bit of creativity, a comb, and some hairspray. Your little princess is sure to go crazy for these new styles, all inspired by her favorites in Disney royalty!

1. Belle’s half up-do

Belle’s classy half up-do seen during her romantic evening with the Beast is a great hairstyle for school but elegant enough for an event. Dress it up with a pretty ribbon or a tidy little bow. In lieu of a Velcro roller to create the “bump,” you may use a rolled nylon stocking or similar piece of soft material.

2. Snow White’s curly bob

Although this tutorial shows how to turn longer hair into a faux bob, the curling and pinning methods used to create Snow White’s look will work great on short hair too. Don’t forget Snow’s classic red bow headband!

3. Jasmine’s tiered ponytail

This Jasmine hairdo is a dressier version of the basic ponytail, making it a great go-to for mornings when the girls are running a little late! Part hair on one side and drape it loosely into the ponytail to add even more Princess Jasmine flair.

4. Ariel’s elegant swoop

Ariel’s “swoopy” bangs and loose curls were perfect for her first dinner at Prince Eric’s castle, and any little girl will look just as fabulous in this hairstyle. Take the swoop down a notch if you’re looking for a look that’s a bit less characterized or add a few seashells to amp it up!

5. Elsa’s coronation hair

Elsa’s coronation look is a great way to keep hair back and away from the face in an elegant way. Just start at the front and keep twisting until all the hair is gathered and curled into a bun. Oh, and of course the look wouldn’t be complete without a tiara!

6. Anna’s coronation hair

Make this cute up-do your girl’s go-to for parties and events! Anna’s coronation hairstyle might look complicated, but the instructions from CuteGirls Hairstyles make it very doable. The tutorial uses a purchased braid headband like this one, but also suggests how to use real hair to form the braid in front, just like Anna.

7. Cinderella’s up-do

Simple and sweet like Cinderella, try this easy up-do on any busy morning! This is a style that can work for many lengths of hair and can be dolled up with a bow in the back or, as Cinderella prefers, a headband in the front! Add a little volume in the front to capture even more princess essence.

8. Elsa’s side braid

We’re going to double-up on Elsa hairstyles because, let’s face it, she’s got great hair. And who doesn’t love the loose, wavy braid Elsa styles for herself after letting it go? Avoid those tight, head-numbing braids and try this more relaxed look instead.

9. Rapunzel’s fancy braid

Follow this tutorial to give the girls Rapunzel’s elaborate braid whether or not their hair is a mile-long. If you really want to capture the look, add some pretty flowers and hair clips.

10. Merida’s tight curls

Merida’s rather unruly curls may not be your cup of tea, but with a bit of taming they can be perfect for a bouncy, spiraled hairdo for the little girls in your life. This tutorial uses plastic drinking straws and bobby pins to create the perfect spiral curl. Short-haired girls can pull off the same technique using straws that have been cut down to size.

How to Make Hair Grow Faster

Whether you’re trying to grow out a bad haircut or just want a little extra length, here is some advice from a few of my favorite hair stylists on how to make your hair grow faster.

How to make your hair grow faster via Tipsaholic

9 Secrets to Make Your Hair Grow Faster

1. Eat healthy food.

A healthier body means healthier hair, and when your hair is healthy, it grows well and is less prone to breakage. Quality input means quality output, right? A diet rich in fruits and veggies, healthy fats and proteins, and necessary vitamins and nutrients will keep your hair in the best possible shape.

2. Drink lots of water.

Again, if you keep your body healthy, it will show in your hair. Staying hydrated is important, so keep a water bottle close by and drink up.

3. Take vitamins.

If you are eating a well-balanced diet, chances are good that your vitamin needs are being met. Still, many women swear by taking prenatal vitamins or biotin supplements to make hair grow faster. It’s all about ensuring that your body has the fuel it needs to be as healthy as possible. (Just be mindful that it is possible to overdose on certain vitamins and cause your body–and your hair–more damage than good.)

4. Use the right shampoo and conditioner.

Harsh cleansers can dry your hair and cause it to break more easily. And your conditioner may not be as moisturizing as you think, despite what the packaging says. Before purchasing shampoo or conditioner, find out what’s in them. Look for products that do not contain sulfates or alcohols. The best conditioners will include oils such as jojoba, cocoa, shea, or avocado at the top of the list of ingredients.

5. Don’t wash your hair as often.

This can be a tough one, especially if your hair tends to be greasy and/or limp. But the more you wash your hair, the more likely you are to be stripping it of necessary oils and damaging the protective cuticle. Try not washing it one day a week to start; aim for washing every other day or even less frequently. (And remember that dry shampoo can be a life saver on those in between days!)

6. Avoid heat.

Blow drying, curling, straightening…heat can be extremely damaging to your hair. And when the goal is to make hair grow faster, deliberately ruining it is probably not a great idea! Cut back on how much you use your styling tools, and use a lower heat setting when you do use them.

7. Avoid harsh chemicals and dyes.

A friend of mine was just bemoaning the fact that her beautifully highlighted hair was starting to break off near her scalp. Her color was great, but the stubby chunks of hair made her question whether it was worth it to stay quite so blonde. It’s best for your hair to avoid dyes altogether, but let’s be realistic: playing with colors, hiding grays, and adding highlights can be great for your confidence! If you do dye your hair, be sure to use gentle, color-safe shampoos and extremely moisturizing conditioners (see tip #4) to help counteract the damage from all those chemicals.

8. Get regular trims.

This might seem counter-intuitive, since cutting it frequently won’t actually help make hair grow faster. It will seem to grow faster, though. Regular trims keep split ends in check and helps you avoid that growing-out-an-awkward-haircut look. Not cutting your hair for a year will certainly give you more length, but if the ends look rough and damaged or your layers are awkward and shaggy, your long hair is not going to be nearly as pretty as you imagined.

9. Know your limits.

All hair is not created equal. Curly or straight, oily or dry, thick or fine, voluminous or flat, dark or fair…your hair type will be the ultimate determining factor in how long it can grow. Some hair types just break more easily than others, so shorter cuts work better. Other hair types get tangled and difficult to manage, making long hair impractical. Know yourself. Be honest about how much effort you are willing to put into maintaining long hair.

Regardless of what kind of hair you have, you should do what you can to keep it healthy and beautiful. But don’t expect it to be something it’s not. If waist-length beachy waves are not realistic for you, then rock that  pixie cut or mass of ringlets and know that you look fantastic.
