simplified home decorating

If you’re a believer in the principal of “less is more,” you may have already looked into making lifestyle changes that will leave more time for the things in life you really value. But have you considered making changes to your home décor? Test the waters of a simpler style by using these minimalist home decorating basics to pare down the unnecessary in your house and maximize your free time.

1. Define the purpose

In a simplified home, every room and space has a defined purpose. If your bathroom is housing your pile of laundry or your living room has become a toy bin, it’s time to make a change. Decide what each room’s function will be. Within the room, decide what spaces and surfaces will house which items. If you’ve allowed your bedside table to become a desk with discarded mail and pens, clear the surface and start fresh. Give each item a specific place in the house.

2. Minimize clutter

The second thing that needs to be taken care of when simplifying your décor is cutting back on clutter so that there are fewer things to find “homes” for in a room. The less you own, the less you’ll need in the way of storage baskets, bins, and shelves. Keep the things that will add the most to your theme or style. Keep things that can be used throughout the year so that you don’t need to worry about swapping them with the seasons. Keep things that serve a purpose.

3. Minimize furniture

Do you really need two end tables plus a coffee table? Two bookshelves? Now that you’ve cut back on possessions, you probably don’t need as many surfaces and places to store them. Keep what is functional and adds to the style you are trying to convey and consider getting rid of the rest.

4. Make a statement

Just because you’re purging the extra stuff doesn’t mean your home has to be empty and boring. Rather than having many smaller items that take lots of time to clean and swap when seasons change, use a few larger ones to make your style statement. Bright colors, interesting pieces of furniture, rich textures, and large pieces of art are foundational in a simplistic style.

5. Don’t be afraid of space

Once you’ve cleared your home of the unnecessary, you may find it feels a little bare. Don’t let it scare you! Keep the space. You have more room now! More room to breathe, to move, to invite friends over. And you’ll have more time too, because you’ve already removed the things that needed constant organizing, dusting, and cleaning out. Fill this new space in your home and your schedule with fun, family, friends, and living a life you love.

Top 8 Household Uses for Peppermint Oil

Add these uses for peppermint oil to your home maintenance checklist and give your house a natural boost. Top 8 Household Uses for Peppermint Oil via @tipsaholic #peppermint #oils #youngliving #essentialoils #peppermintoil

Top 8 Household Uses for Peppermint Oil
Peppermint isn’t just for candy canes! Peppermint oil is a popular essential oil that can be used in many places around your home to freshen, clean, and deter pests. These household uses for peppermint oil promote a more natural way of living and achieving greater health. Try a few of the simple recipes and techniques listed here to care for the inside and outside of your home.

1. Fresh scent

Add a few drops of peppermint oil to trash bins, disposals, and other areas of your home that may carry a “smell.” You can also try dropping a bit onto the inside of a roll of toilet paper – the scent releases every time someone takes some!

2. All-purpose cleaning

Add a little peppermint oil to any of your homemade household cleaners for a fresh scent or make a peppermint-specific cleaner using:

1 cup of water

½ cup of vinegar

½ teaspoon dish soap

3 drops peppermint oil

Mix the ingredients together in a spray bottle and use it on hard surfaces.

3. Insect and spider repellent

A simple mixture of 5 drops of peppermint oil, a squirt of dish soap, and about 3 cups of warm water may be just the right remedy for the creepy crawlies making their home around yours. Shake it together in a spray bottle and spritz in corners.

4. Room spray

Use this recipe from The Prairie Homestead and spray the mixture around your home when company is coming over, or just to freshen a bathroom or laundry room for your own benefit! It is also safe to use on furniture and upholstery.

5. Mouse control

Peppermint oil is has a strong scent that may discourage mice. Soak cotton balls with several drops of peppermint oil and distribute them around baseboards, cupboards, and other places in your home where you’ve noticed rodent activity. Replace the cotton balls every few days.

6. Wasp spray

Get rid of wasp nests and keep insects from rebuilding in the same area with this recipe for a handy wasp spray. Be sure spray the nest in the cooler hours when the wasps are slower and less active to give yourself the best chance of getting them all.

7. Cleaning mold

Add a half teaspoon of peppermint oil to a mix of a half cup of vinegar and a half cup of salt in a spray bottle and get to work on mold lurking in bathroom and basement corners. Spray and allow it to sit for several minutes before wiping it clean.

8. Plant health

Spray your plants with a mix of water and several drops of peppermint oil a few times a week. Diluted oil won’t hurt the plant and the spray will discourage pests and get rid of plant-eating aphids.

10 Closet Office Ideas: How to Create an Office Space You’ll Love

No space for an office? How about building an office closet? Here are 10 useful closet office ideas that will maximize the space in your tiny office! 10 Closet Office Ideas: How to Create an Office Space You’ll Love via tipsaholic.com #office #closet #officespace #officeideas #homeoffice

10 Closet Office Ideas How to Create an Office Space You’ll Love
A great closet office saves space in your home and makes great use of a closet that might otherwise go unused or be filled with random junk. Here are 10 closet office ideas that will help you use every inch in effective ways to maximize your space!

1. Install light sconces or overhead lighting to save space on your desk.

Desk space is limited in a closet office; don’t crowd it with a lamp. Instead, put up a light sconce or two to get the lighting you need as you work without sacrificing desktop space.

A great overhead light would work just as well if you prefer that look! An overhead light would also save your wall space if you wanted to add more shelves and bulletin boards.

2. Use the sides of your closet for extra shelving.

You’ll probably focus on adding shelving and art to the back wall, but don’t forget about the sides of your closet office. Add shelves for even more storage.

3. Make your closet office do double duty by raising the hanging bar so you can hang clothes or coats above your desk.

If you have limited space in your home and still need your closet office to function as a closet, this office closet idea might be a great solution for you. This would be perfect for a closet office in a guest room.

Pegboards are organizational workhorses and look so pretty when painted in your favorite color. They are especially useful for a crafting and/or sewing closet office.

5. Use the doors to your closet office as extra wall space for organization.

Some closet offices work well with the closet doors removed, but consider leaving the doors to gain even more wall surface space to organize office supplies, file paperwork, or to hold a calendar.

6. Add curtains to the bottom of your desktop to conceal more storage.

Don’t forget about all the space under your desk; you could put filing cabinets, baskets, boxes, and so much more in all that space. However, all that stuff can start to look cluttered. A simple solution is to add fabric, like a curtain, to cover everything up.

There are so many different ways to incorporate a desk in your closet office; the best desk for you depends on how you want to use your office. If you need a large desk that spans the entire length of the closet, try adding supports along all the walls and topping it off with a piece of MDF or plywood. Here’s a good tutorial on how to do that.

9. Add cabinets for extra concealed storage.

Many closet offices include shelves on the main wall, but another idea to consider is to use cabinets instead. They can hold a lot more and you can close the doors anytime to cover up all the stuff. Add pretty knobs and maybe a coat of paint to personalize it.

10. Think about providing access for your electronics when designing your closet office.

If you’re like most people, you’ll work on your laptop, computer, or sewing machine in your closet office. All these things need to be plugged in, so don’t forget about that important aspect when you’re building your closet office. You could install an outlet right inside the closet for the most convenience – here’s a tutorial on how to do that – or hire an electrician to do that for you.

Also, you might want to drill a hole on the top of your desk to feed through your electrical outlets.

25 Simple Ways to Use Thieves Essential Oil

25 Simple Ways to Use Thieves Oil - Tipsaholic

 thieves header

Thieves Essential Oil blend is a fantastic natural addition to your medicine cabinet.  This oil is a proprietary blend of rosemary, cloves and other aromatics and botanicals.  It’s beneficial for immune support and is well known for it’s purifying properties.  Thieves can be used as an aromatic or topically, giving it a lot of versatility.  How versatile, you ask?  Well, here’s just a sample of the simple ways to use Thieves essential oil in your home!

1. Immune Support Capsules – Pour a few drops of the oil in a capsule and swallow with water for a boost to your immune system.  Fight off colds during flu season before you even feel them coming!  Or take them periodically on a regular schedule to increase longevity.

2.  Topical Rub – Feeling ill?  Kick cold or stomach bug symptoms to the curb.  Dilute Thieves with regular olive oil and rub it on the soles of the feet (or along the spine for particularly nasty bugs).  This will help your body absorb their purifying properties and jump start your immune response to sickness.

immuneboostfootrubhorz1

3. Laryngitis – Place a diluted drop of Thieves under your tongue when your voice is raspy or gone entirely.  It’ll help clear up your vocal strain in no time.

4. Nasal Function – If you’re feeling sniffly, sneezy and itchy, putting Thieves on the soles of the feet can alleviate symptoms and encourage proper nasal function.  You can also apply a drop of Thieves diluted in a drop of olive oil directly under your nose.

5. Lung Congestion – Place Thieves in a diffuser then drape your head with a towel, trapping the vapors.  Breath the vapors in for up to 5 minutes.

6. Travel Well – Take Thieves along with you when you travel on planes, trains or buses.  Rub some into the soles of your feet or take a drop or two with orange juice to ward off airborne illnesses and amp up your immune system.

7. Throat Spray – Adding Thieves to a spray bottle of water and sea salt can create your very own version of a disinfectant spray.  You can then use this to numb a sore throat!

8. Headache Relief – This quick fix for headaches requires nothing special at all!  Simply use a finger to apply a drop of Thieves to the roof of your mouth.

9. Skin abrasions – If you’ve got a small cut or simple abrasion, ditch the Neosporin and try Thieves instead.  Apply 1-3 drops with a cotton ball or q-tip to the wound for anti-bacterial purposes and to speed healing.

10.  Skin Care – To help with acne, you can dilute a few drop of Thieves with a carrier oil, like coconut oil (known for anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties), and apply it to affected spots with a q-tip.  Or mix it with olive oil and apply over the face.  It’s nontoxic and will clean away nasty germs.

Your-Rx-for-flawless-skin

11. Wart Remover – No more expensive and only slightly affective OTC wart removers!  All you need to do is apply Thieves directly to the affected area – or dilute it with some coconut oil.  It’ll kill any viruses there and get rid of those warts completely.  Added bonus: the coconut oil will moisturize the area as well!

12. Athlete’s Foot – Rub oil “neat” (undiluted) directly onto the area of your foot that’s infected.  Or you can make a foot soak with warm water, epsom salts and thieves combined.

768583d2abfa7a19357163e9ef3287e5

13. Canker Sore Relief – Follow the directions here to fight off canker sores.  You can apply the oil “neat” (undiluted) directly to the spot, or dilute it with coconut oil – known for its anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties.  Not only will it speed the healing process, but it will numb the area upon contact for some needed relief.

14. Gum Health – Rub a drop of oil neat on irritated areas of the gum, or dilute it with a natural oil carrier like coconut or olive oil, then apply with a q-tip.  It will reduce swelling and inflammation, kill germs and bacteria, and promote overall dental health.  Plus, it’ll help freshen your breath!

15. Oil-pulling – Combine a drop of Thieves with coconut oil for regular oil-pulling.  This can help with oral hygiene, as well as immune support and overall health.

16.  Remove Splinters – Applying Thieves oil to a sliver or splinter and allowing it to rest for about 5 minutes will reduce the inflammation and cause the sliver to rise to the surface of the skin.  With its anti-bacterial properties it’s a great alternative to rubbing alcohol or the like.

17. Natural Air Purifier – Use a diffuser with Thieves for 15-30 minutes in your home to purify the air.  It will start removing mold around the house and eliminate some germs.  It leaves a refreshing, natural and clean scent.  It can also promote a happier mood.

18. Floor Care – Add a few drops to a bucket of water and mop your floor as you normally do.  It will ward of mold and mildew, kill germs and bacteria and make your floors smell good!

19. Sani-Wipes – Add a few drops of Thieves to warm water, then dip in clean, small scraps of cotton or muslin cloth.  Wring them out well, then keep them in a small, airtight glass jar.  Take them with you when shopping to disinfect shopping carts and other germy surfaces.  It’s nontoxic, so perfectly safe with kids.

20.  Dishwashing – Use a few drops in your dishwater or dishwasher along with your regular detergent to thoroughly clean your dishes.  Bonus: it eliminates any lingering odor from grease or strong-smelling foods!

21. Purifying Spray – Add Thieves to water in a glass spray bottle and spray everything that is high traffic – light switches, doorknobs, countertops, etc.  This is especially effective during flu season to ward off unwanted germs and bacteria.  It can also get rid of mold in damp areas and prevent future mold build up – just add some distilled white vinegar as well.

22. Bath Toy Disinfectant – Make a solution of equal parts vinegar and hot water, then add a few drops of Thieves.  Soak your bath toys for 10 minutes to get rid of mold and help with mold prevention.

23. Canine Wound Care – If you’ve got a furry four-legged friend that’s prone to surface scrapes and abrasions, you can use Thieves to clean the cut and speed healing.

24. Marker Eraser – If you accidentally grab the wrong type of marker when using a white board, you can make that “permanent” problem go away by putting a few drop of Thieves on a tissue and rubbing.

25. Plant Care – Spraying diluted Thieves on houseplants or gardens can repel insects and guard against mold or fungus.  Learn more essential oil plant care tips at the link.
