How to Make Your Photos More Meaningful

Don't settle for basic snapshots of your most important memories, use these tips to improve your photography skills and make your photos more meaningful. How to Make Your Photos More Meaningful ~ Tipsaholic.com #photography #photos

meaningful3

When we are in a moment and hope that the memory of it will last, we sometimes take a photo to remind us. But too often, the photos we take focus more on saying “cheese” than on the real elements of the moment. Use these five tools to make your photos more meaningful today.

1. Get on the same level as your subject

Whether it is a child, a pet, your grandmother in a wheelchair, or Uncle Albert who used to play college basketball, get on your subject’s level. Try to see things from their point of view and look at things the way they might. Get a close-up of those ants your child notices marching across the sidewalk or snap a photo of Uncle Albert as he ducks under the chandelier in the dining room. Changing your own view point can make a huge difference in your photos.

2. Take un-posed shots

Going with the photo-taking favorite of “Say cheese!” will definitely get everyone’s attention, but it will also get you a lot of posed, inauthentic faces. Try going for more candid shots. Capture faces made during conversations, games, cooking dinner, and other moments. Grandma’s head-tilted-back laugh while she talks with her daughter or the intense focus on the faces of young cousins as they make mud pies, are the ones you’ll really treasure.

3. Capture raw emotion

You may not always think of pulling out the camera when emotions are running high, particularly in moments of sadness or frustration, but these may turn out to be some of your most moving, poignant photos and may help you process your own thoughts and feelings. When looking for opportunities to take such photos, consider taking your camera along (with permission, if needed) to major events like weddings, births, and homecomings. Look beyond the happy, posed photos and get closer to more intimate scenes. You’ll soon learn when and where you’re likely to find the most memorable images.

4. Capture personalities and passions

A truly wonderful photograph will embody the spirit of a person. Some of your most meaningful photo opportunities may come while a person is focused on something they love or showing their true self as they struggle, play, learn, or simply sit and think. Your job is to have your camera ready for those moments. You may also try projects that capture the many faces of a person as you ask them to run the gamut of their emotions. These can preserve the more simple memories you have of someone’s personality, like your child’s funny way of crinkling their nose when you talk about a food they dislike or your mother’s warm smile when you remind her of times you spent reading together.

5. Get closer or step back

If many of your photos feel more like they’re just a picture of a random scene than a real moment, change your proximity. In most cases, getting closer to your subjects makes the biggest difference. In other cases, you may want to try a new vantage point. Get up high and look down on a scene or down low and look up. Zoom in on details like hands, mouths, and eyes to cover all of the bits and pieces that describe your feelings in that moment.

Once you’ve added these methods to your photography arsenal, remember to print and cherish your photos rather than leaving the memories to fade on your computer’s hard drive. A photo meant to capture a memory is only as meaningful as the conversations it sparks when it is viewed.

9 Tips for Container Gardening

Container gardening is perfect for homes with small or nonexistent backyards, cold climates, and renters. Here are 9 tips for container gardening! 9 Tips for Container Gardening via @tipsaholic #gardening #containers #containergardening #garden

9 Tips for Container Gardening
Container gardening is a great way to grow vegetables, fruit, and other plants if your backyard is too small or nonexistent. You could also grow plants that wouldn’t survive in your climate by keeping them indoors during the cold season. Plus, you would be able to move your plants without digging up anything, making it a great option for renters. Here are 9 tips for container gardening!

Container gardening is perfect for homes with small or nonexistent backyards, cold climates, and renters. Here are 9 tips for container gardening! 9 Tips for Container Gardening via @tipsaholic #gardening #containers #containergardening #garden

1. Choose the right container for your plants. Pay attention to the size and type of your pots for successful container gardening. Generally, larger plants, such as summer squash, need larger containers, while smaller plants, like annuals and small herbs, will do well in 10-inch containers.

2. You don’t have to completely fill a large container with soil, which can get expensive and will make your container garden very heavy. Use a lighter filler material, like packing peanuts, soda cans, or pine cones, to fill out the pot. You could also create a false bottom. However, if you live in a windy area, you want it heavy so it doesn’t fall over. Add rock or gravel to keep it grounded.

3. You can grow large plants and trees in containers, but be sure to transfer them to bigger containers or the ground when they become root-bound. This means that the roots of your plant has grown so much that there is no more room in the container, leading to stunted growth and eventually death. If your tree stops growing vertically, even if it continues to produce fruit and leaves, it’s probably root-bound and needs a larger container. Roots might grow through drainage holes and over the lip of the pot.

 4. Grow trees in containers and put them around your patio or porch for added beauty until they become root-bound. Then you can plant them in your land and then switch it up with a new tree or plant for your containers. Just make sure to break up some of the roots before planting it into the ground.

5. Love fruit trees but don’t have the space or a permanent home? Container gardening is the perfect way to enjoy a fruit tree, such as a citrus tree, banana plant, or fig tree, without having to plant it in your land. Start out with a 5- or 7-gallon container and move the tree to a 10- to 15-gallon container when it grows and becomes root-bound.

6. Always ensure that your container gardens have adequate drainage. There should be holes in the bottom and/or sides of the container. This helps excess water to drain out and allows air to access the soil. Diseases can occur if there isn’t enough drainage.

7. Another way to achieve optimal drainage in container gardening is to use quality potting soil. A potting mix will give you good drainage and will have no weeds or pests.

8. Yes, you can actually grow vegetables in a container. Here is a great article on growing broccoli in containers.  Read to the end, where you’ll find links to tutorials on growing more vegetables in containers, including beets, cherry tomatoes, arugula, jalapenos, and radishes. And check out this post that recommends five vegetables that grow well in containers.  You could have a whole vegetable garden on your patio, all in pretty containers, even if you live on the 15th floor in an apartment building!

9. Planting all of your herbs in one container is a great way to streamline your gardening AND cooking. You’ll be able to easily grab the herbs you want, all at the same time, as you cook. Put your herb container on casters so you can bring it in to the kitchen when you need it and move it under the shade when it’s hot outside.

How to Create the Perfect Container Garden

Creating a container garden can be simple if you follow these tips for choosing the right plants and containers. Spruce up your home with a pot or two! How to Create the Perfect Container Garden ~ Tipsaholic.com #container #garden #gardening

How to Create the Perfect Potted Garden ~ Tipsaholic.com

The vision of a beautiful home often includes images of carefully potted plants and flowers. If you’d like to add to your home’s appeal by planting a few container gardens but are just not sure how, this gardening guide will put you on the right track. Spruce up your porch, patio, and other parts of your home using these tips for designing the perfect container garden.

The container itself

Different containers provide different benefits, so don’t just go for the pots with the most eye-catching patterns. The drainage and moisture needs of your plants should be a part of your decision when it comes to containers. You may need to punch some holes in the bottom of a pot if it needs more drainage or plug a few holes if you need less. Wood containers look nice but may be prone to rot. Hanging planters will need frequent watering. You can find more tips on containers here.

Know where your pots will live

If you’re filling a pot with sun-loving plants but plan to place it on your porch where there’s only shade, stop! Choose the right types of plants for the areas you want to fill. There are plants that love shade, plants that love sun, and plants that need a little of each. Plan ahead so you don’t end up with dead plants.

Choose plants that share growth needs

Sunlight, soil and moisture needs should be similar among the plants sharing a pot. Don’t mix plants that love the sun with plants that love the shade or desert cacti with water-lovers – you’re sure to be disappointed! Purchase the best kind of soil for the plants in each of your pots to get the best growth results.

Vary the sizes

Using variations of tall, medium, and small plants to fill all the visual space is one of the first rules in designing a container gardens. Another way to look at this rule is to make sure your pot includes one each of a vertically-growing plant, a horizontally-growing, and one that “cascades” over the sides of the container. Pay attention to what the plants are now versus the way they will be when they are fully grown.

Use contrasting plants

Use plants with contrasting colors and textures to give your container garden the most visual interest. A plant with smooth-edged leaves may be complimented by one with jagged edges. A plant with brightly colored blooms may look best next to a tall grass. You may want to buy all of the plants for a particular container at one time so that you can try out different combinations right there in your shopping cart.

Think about how the plants will change

The plants you choose may start small but will undoubtedly grow, taking up more space than you may have originally planned. Check the labels or ask nursery attendants for details about the different plants. Some plants may also develop blooms of various kinds and colors and you may need to take that into account if you have a particular color or texture scheme in mind. Also be aware of plants that may attract certain insects or birds — this may be something you want, or it may be something to avoid!

Take care in planting

Follow the planting and care instructions for each plant so that you have the best chances of keeping them all alive during the potting process. Moving plants from their original containers to new ones can be stressful for them and they may need some time to adjust before you put them outside, especially if the weather is not ideal. Do your best to care for the plants each day and your container gardens will be a pleasant and eye-catching addition to your home.

No matter the age or gender, having kids share a bedroom can be challenging. Here are 25 awesome ideas to create the perfect shared bedroom! 25 Stellar Shared Bedrooms for Kids - Tipsaholic, #DIY, #bedroom, #design, #sharedroom, #kidsCorner Beds  –  The long, rectangular shape of this room along with the placement of french doors and large windows made furniture layout a little less straightforward when planning for two kids.  By placing identical beds in an “L” in one corner, wall space is fully utilized while the middle of the floor is kept free of clutter and bulk.  The functionality of one under-bed drawer is lost, but there are other storage solutions added to the room to make up for it.

Here are 25 awesome ideas to create the perfect shared bedroom! 25 Stellar Shared Bedrooms for Kids - Tipsaholic, #DIY, #bedroom, #design, #sharedroom, #kidsCrib Nook  – Two boys shared this room originally, and it was cozy then.  When a baby girl came along, they converted the closet to a nook for her crib, complete with shelving and decor to feminize her space and make it uniquely her own.  Clothes were put in a dresser between the twin beds.  While it’s a small room, it definitely works for three kids and there’s no lack of space.

Here are 25 awesome ideas to create the perfect shared bedroom! 25 Stellar Shared Bedrooms for Kids - Tipsaholic, #DIY, #bedroom, #design, #sharedroom, #kidsExtra Long Bed  – This room features an extra long platform that spans the length of the room.  It’s long enough to fit two twin mattresses on it with some room between.  This is a great solution for sleeping arrangements in a shared space, especially if it’s a narrow room and could benefit by having all the furniture against one wall.  Notice the storage drawers below the bed and the storage shelves above – in coordinated colors that bring a cohesive, put-together feeling to the space.  Though the bed butts up to the closet along the perpendicular wall, the doors slide apart, making it completely usable still.

No matter the age or gender, having kids share a bedroom can be challenging. Here are 25 awesome ideas to create the perfect shared bedroom! 25 Stellar Shared Bedrooms for Kids - Tipsaholic, #DIY, #bedroom, #design, #sharedroom, #kidsIndustrial Space for 3  –   The space beneath the loft bed in this room was just large enough for a king sized mattress, placed perpendicular to the twin above so it juts into the room.  With three young boys in this space, it’s the perfect solution as it eliminates headboards, footboards, and bed frames that take up valuable real estate.  The steel frame of the loft was the perfect inspiration for the industrial decor and storage – a chest with bins for toys and two metal racks, one with metal toolboxes for small treasures and collections and one with galvanized buckets for stuffed animals.  The kids have enough storage and space to sleep and play – even with three in one room!

No matter the age or gender, having kids share a bedroom can be challenging. Here are 25 awesome ideas to create the perfect shared bedroom! 25 Stellar Shared Bedrooms for Kids - Tipsaholic, #DIY, #bedroom, #design, #sharedroom, #kidsAbove Bed Shelving  –  At first glance, this room seems as if it’s not big enough for one child and their accompanying “stuff,” let alone two.  When one of them is a girl and one a boy, making this tiny space work for both seems an insurmountable challenge.  By placing the beds next to each other, but separated by a chest of drawers, there’s a clear division of space.  But what makes this room really work well is the above bed storage – a wall of shelves above each bed for storing special treasures and toys.  Making use of the architecture already present in the space, the beds and shelves look like expensive built-ins.

No matter the age or gender, having kids share a bedroom can be challenging. Here are 25 awesome ideas to create the perfect shared bedroom! 25 Stellar Shared Bedrooms for Kids - Tipsaholic, #DIY, #bedroom, #design, #sharedroom, #kidsBuilt-Ins On Both Ends  –  A narrow room like this is best utilized by placing the furniture together against one long wall.  This can be challenging when trying to add everything necessary – like dressers and shelves along with two beds.  This room does it with built-ins – on both sides of the room.  One side is built-in bunk beds with closed storage/cabinets on both ends, and open shelving filling in the remaining space along the wall.  The other wall is a combination of open and closed shelving, so there’s no need for dressers or bookshelves.  Everything has a spot.

No matter the age or gender, having kids share a bedroom can be challenging. Here are 25 awesome ideas to create the perfect shared bedroom! 25 Stellar Shared Bedrooms for Kids - Tipsaholic, #DIY, #bedroom, #design, #sharedroom, #kidsPrivacy Partition  –  Perhaps your kids would appreciate a bit more privacy to their separate areas.  You can accomplish this in nearly any sized bedroom by utilizing some kind of room divider.  The best room divider for a kids’ bedroom will incorporate plenty of storage, as does this large shelf with cubbies.  Putting pegboard on one side of the shelf allows for hanging storage and even more separation.

No matter the age or gender, having kids share a bedroom can be challenging. Here are 25 awesome ideas to create the perfect shared bedroom! 25 Stellar Shared Bedrooms for Kids - Tipsaholic, #DIY, #bedroom, #design, #sharedroom, #kids5 Kids, 1 Room  – You’ll never believe it, but there are 5 boys in this room.  5 of them!  And it works.  The furniture is kept to a minimum – two small bookshelves, two sets of bunk beds and one toddler bed.  No dressers.  No desks.  With the bunk beds pushed into the corner in an “L”, it gives the look (and space-saving) of built-in bunks.  There are shelves and bins in the closets and under beds for clothing, so no dressers are needed.  A clever solution to keep from feeling too stuffed, even with a herd of boys!

No matter the age or gender, having kids share a bedroom can be challenging. Here are 25 awesome ideas to create the perfect shared bedroom! 25 Stellar Shared Bedrooms for Kids - Tipsaholic, #DIY, #bedroom, #design, #sharedroom, #kidsBuilt-In Bunks  –  This is an amazing space for 5 girls.  One wall was changed into built-in bunk beds – with a set of stairs in between.  Each bed is outfitted with a curtain to pull for privacy, a shelf for books and a lamp.  It’s basically like sleeping in a fort, every night.  Below the bunks are oversized drawers for toy storage.  There’s a nook for a dresser built-in across from the beds (which is actually three Ikea dressers put together, but you’d never know it) and on one short wall, they created a closet by hanging curtains along a track in the ceiling.  It’s comfy, it’s bright and cheery and, surprisingly, not at all cramped.

5 Prom Hairstyles

Prom is coming up. Once you find the perfect dress, complete your look with the perfect prom hairstyle. Here are some ideas to get you started. 5 Ways to wear your hair to prom via @tipsaholic #hair #prom #promhair #hairstyles

5 Prom Hairstyles

Prom is often the big event for the school year. The dress is perfect and the shoes are just right. Now a great prom hairstyle is needed to complete the look. These 5 hairstyles will make any one feel like a queen on Prom night.

One Sided Look

This is the right prom look for a soft style that lets your hair down, while still keeping it in place after a night of dancing. Start with curled hair for a voluminous and textured style. Gather hair to one side and keep draped over the shoulder. Secure with pins along the back of the head.

Bun On Top Look

For a polished look that keeps your hair off your shoulders, try this hairstyle. Put hair in a large bun on the top of the head. Make sure hair is slicked down with no fly a ways. Add a thin headband to the front, to complete the look. Choose a headband with a material that color coordinates with your dress or something with rhinestones to add some sparkly to your style.

Half Up Half Down Look

This look gives you the best of both worlds. Start by teasing the roots at the crown to add texture and volume to your hair. Take the side pieces of hair, twist, and secure together at the back of the head with pins and some hairspray. Add curls to the rest of the hair with a large barrel curling iron. Let them lie loose, while trailing down your back.

Braided Look

This can add a sweet, romantic style to any prom look. Braid both side portions of hair. For the back section of hair gather into a ponytail and secure with an elastic band. Twist the ends of the braid around the elastic band to hide it. Add jeweled pins or hair accessories every few inches along the braids on both sides.

Let It Flow Look

As with most things, sometimes simplest is best. Just let your hair fall naturally down. It can either be worn straight or curly. Whatever you decide, because, after all prom, is your chance to look your best in whichever way you choose.
