13 Water Safety Tips for Young Children and Their Caregivers

Swimming is a favorite summer activity, but it can be a dangerous one. Here are 13 water safety tips that will ensure a fun and safe swimming experience. 13 Water Safety Tips for Young Children and Their Caregivers via @tipsaholic #kids #water #swimming #watersafety #summer

Swimming is a favorite summer activity, but it can be a dangerous one. Drowning is the second cause of death for children  and so many of them happen under adult supervision. Here are 13 water safety tips that you and your children should always follow to ensure a fun and safe swimming experience.

1. Caregivers should learn basic CPR.

Learn how to give CPR to children by taking a local class and ask everyone who watches your child to do the same. For now, go ahead and look through this handy reference to familiarize yourself with what you should do should a emergency occur. Every second matters when there is a drowning accident and child CPR is something that you can do while waiting for help to come.

2. Establish swimming rules and enforce them always.

Before going swimming, talk with your children and establish a few rules that should always be followed. Some suggestions include:

  • They must always ask permission before going into the water. You could decide on a verbal cue or a signal that lets them know that it’s okay to jump into the water. They cannot begin swimming until you give the cue.
  • Young children should always enter the water feet first, on their tummies. This helps them be more cautious of the water and be more aware of how deep the water is as they’re going in, as opposed to going into the water on the stairs.
  • Absolutely no running. This can be hard to enforce, but oh so important. Kids can slip in wet environments, hit their heads, and fall to the bottom of the pool. Lots of reminders and training will be necessary to help your kids follow this rule.
  • No dunking. Sometimes kids don’t know their limits and an accident can occur as a result of playful dunking that has gone too far.

Remind your children of your family’s swimming rules and discuss them often, during family meetings, breakfast time before swimming, and other times when you’re not at the pool or beach. This helps them remember the rules more then when at the pool, when they might be too excited to listen to you talking about rules.

3. Create barriers between the child and the body of water.

Whether you have a pool at home, a beach a few blocks away, or a stream behind your house, ensure that there is something to prevent your kids from falling into the water. Pools should be equipped with a pool gate that is lockable and self-closing. A pool cover is another way to protect your children. An alarm system is a good idea; it can alert you if a child goes out a door or a window without permission. Add locking mechanisms to sliding doors and any other entry points between your child and the water.

Test out these barriers to make sure they work as intended. Go down to your kids’ level and check whether they would be able to climb over a gate with a chair, undo a safety latch, or slip through an unsecured window.

4. Remove all toys and floaties from the water when you’re done swimming.

A colorful toy or a lone floatie in the middle of a pool can be alluring to a small child, who might fall in while trying to grab it. Make sure the pool is empty of all toys and floaties and remember to close the pool gate behind you.

5. Check the pool or any body of water FIRST when you can’t find a child.

Again, seconds matter when someone is struggling to breathe while in water. Check the pool (or any other body of water) immediately when you notice you can’t find a kid.

6. Designate an adult to watch the kids with no distractions.

Sometimes when there are a lot of kids and parents, there is a false security that someone must be watching. There’s a lot of distractions and good conversation to be had, and you look away for a few minutes. An accident can happen during these few minutes, so take the time to designate an adult (not an older child) to watch the children. You could take turns every 30 minutes or so. Ideally, there should be a supervising adult per three kids. Other people should know not to distract these supervising adults at any time until their shift is over.

7. Children under the age of 5 should always be at an arm’s reach.

A drowning accident can happen fast, so if you have a child that is younger than five years old, make sure you’re right there next to them at all times while swimming. You’ll be able to grab them and pull them up when they fall into the water, even in shallow water. They might get disoriented and become unable to get their heads above water.

8. Put life jackets on your children when on a boat or in open water.

The life jackets should fit well and be comfortable. But the most important thing is that your kids actually wear them! If your kids aren’t used to wearing life vests, they’ll resist and become cranky, and you might give up and let them not wear them. Give them a chance to get used to wearing them at the home or at a pool before going on your watery adventure.

9. Establish a getting-ready-to-swim routine.

Decide on a routine that you’ll do with your kids every time they go swimming. The routine can be as simple as putting on a swimming diaper and then sunscreen. The key is to do the routine consistently. Your kids will automatically try to do the routine before jumping into water, helping prevent them from doing so impulsively.

10. Encourage your kids to open their eyes in water.

Kids should get used to opening their eyes while underwater, without googles, so they’re able to look around and find a way out if they accidentally fall in water.

11. Have your kids practice putting their heads in water in the bathtub.

Show them how to put their face into the water while bathing. Have them blow bubbles underwater. This will help them become more comfortable with water and panic less if they find themselves underwater.

12. Learn the signs of drowning.

Drowning is quiet and quick, nothing like what it looks like on TV or in the movies. Here is a good article to read to understand what drowning really looks like and what to look for when you’re supervising at the pool.

13. Have a cell phone on hand.

If there’s an emergency, you don’t want to be running around looking for a phone. Have a cell phone or smartphone on you or near you at all times when kids are swimming.

With these water safety tips in mind, go and have a great summer filled with lots of water play and pool outings!

6 Fun Family Campfire Traditions

If you love a crackling summer campfire, you'll love these ideas for creating campfire traditions and lasting memories with your family! 6 Fun Family Campfire Traditions - @Tipsaholic #traditions, #familyfun, #kids, #summer

campfire title
It’s the perfect time of year to enjoy a crackling outdoor fire.  Whether you’re planning a camping trip or just like to cozy up around a backyard fire-pit, campfires can be great fun for everyone!  Chances are you’ve got some of your own campfire traditions you like to do as a family, but there are always more ways to get the kids involved.  Up the entertainment value of your campfires with these fun family traditions!

1. Ghost Stories.  We’ve all heard about this creepy campfire activity, but have you passed it down to your own kids?  Perhaps you don’t remember the ghost stories from your youth, or you could use a little help with some new ghost stories your kids haven’t heard a thousand times!  Check out American Folklore – which has a section designated to ghost stories, one for spooky campfire stories and one for supernatural romance.  Or try these books: 50 Real American Ghost Stories and Creepy, Book 1.

2. Campfire Songs. Of course you’ve probably sung a campfire song or two in your day.  This tradition is still a great one for kids to take part in.  If you’ve gotten rusty over the years, there are a lot of sources that can help you out.  The site Songs for Teaching has a section devoted to campfire songs both silly and traditional.  Bonus: along with the written lyrics, you can also play either the vocal or piano musical tune!  If you play the guitar, you might like a book of lyrics and chords, like this one, so you can learn to play along!

3. The Great Cookout.  If you’re spending time at home during your summer vacation, you could designate a day for “The Great Cookout.”  Come up with a menu for the whole day comprised entirely of meals that can be cooked over the campfire!  If you’re sick of the age-old hot dogs and s’mores, here are some ideas for campfire breakfasts, here are more hardy meals, and here’s some sweet treats you’ll definitely want to try!  Let everyone participate in the planning process, from picking the meals, to shopping for ingredients.  Then cook together and eat outside.

4. Campfire techniques.    Use your campfire as a teaching tool for the family.  Each time you make a fire in your pit or while you’re camping, try out different techniques.  For instance, try different methods of stacking the wood to build the fire.  Did you know there are actually 9 different ways to light a fire without matches?  Try each one!  Make a few different “fire starter kits” and test them out to see which work best.  Your kids are guaranteed to remember all they’ve learned with you around the fire!

5. Roast new things. Sure, you’ve roasted hot dogs on a stick and probably marshmallows as well, but have you ever roasted a Starburst and eaten them when they’re bubbly and warm? Or fruit kebabs – with strawberries and pineapple?  How about roasting campfire cones or banana boats?  There are a ton of things your kids can have fun roasting, so why not switch it up and try roasting new things each time?  Here are a few savory ideas of what to roast.

6. Family Meeting.  When everyone’s gathered together around the campfire, feeling safe and cozy, it can be the perfect time to have a “family meeting.”  Your family meeting can be personalized to your family’s needs – there are so many ways to incorporate this idea.  You could have each person take a turn talking about the positive things that happened that week.  Or let each person talk about something that’s bothering them and come up with solutions together.  Or you could incorporate a religious devotional into your campfire night.  Let someone else plan a message or scripture each time you gather by the campfire.  Another possibility is to take turns having each person talk about their faith and what they believe in.  You may even want to incorporate a “talking stick” to pass around – when someone holds the stick, it’s their turn to share!

9 Tips for Getting a Toddler to Sleep in a Tent

9 tips for getting your toddler to sleep in a tent - @tipsaholic. #tent #camping #kids #summer

 sleep in a tent header

Going camping as a family is a great way to create memories together and to spend a lot of time outside. It might feel scary to bring along a baby or a toddler (or both!), but you’ll have so much fun!  When nightfall comes, many parents are unsure of how to put their kids to sleep in a dark and unfamiliar tent. Here are 9 tips to getting a toddler to sleep in a tent when on a camping trip. (These tips also apply to getting a baby to sleep in a tent, too!)

1. Bring a nightlight.

A campground can be pitch dark during nighttime… how scary that must be to a little human! Try this tent ceiling fan and light; it’s great for getting a toddler to sleep in a tent because it has two light settings: nightlight and regular light. The nightlight is perfectly dim – dark enough to sleep, but not so dark you can’t see. The fan is just a bonus, though it only circulates the air, it doesn’t cool the tent.  It’s worth the price for the nightlight feature!  Another idea is to get a night light that doesn’t need to be plugged in, especially if your campsite doesn’t have electricity and you have no generator. Bonus points if it’s soft and something you can put in the crib with your kid. This SPOKA night light from IKEA is a good option.  Or consider a stuffed animal with a night light.   If you need ideas, check out the Twilight Buddies or Dream Light Pillow Pets.

2. Stay in the tent until your toddler sleeps.

Just as it does when you are trying to acclimate your child to a new crib or bed, it can take a while for him or her to feel comfortable enough to sleep on their own.  Once you leave the tent, it’s quite possible they’ll think it’s play time again!  In an unfamiliar area, it’s even more important for you to help your child feel relaxed enough to drift off, so that means you may have to stay with them until they do.  Just put your child to sleep in their sleeping bag or portable crib and lay down in your own spot.  Hopefully this will give them enough reassurance for them to nod off in no time.

3. Bring a play yard (or two).

If your baby or toddler still sleeps in a crib, a play yard (or pack ‘n play or play pen) is your best bet. It’s similar to a crib and will keep them in one spot until they zonk out. It will work even better if they are used to sleeping in one occasionally.  You may have to upgrade to a large tent in order to accommodate a pack ‘n play, but it’s worth it!  If your toddler isn’t sleeping in a crib anymore, you might still want to enclose them to help them feel safe and sleep. This enclosed bed, the PeaPod is a great option if this is the case! It’s probably not a good idea to introduce a new sleeping routine, like co-sleeping when camping if you don’t do that at home.

3. Put your tent in a shaded area.

For naps, you want the tent to be cool and not too hot or humid. If you pitch your tent in the morning, check where the sun is and it’s path.  This will ensure you find the best spot for your tent, which will aid in afternoon nap times.  Keeping your child as comfy as possible is key!

4. Recreate their beds/cribs at home.

It’s important to make sure your child has their security objects – whether that’s a stuffed animal or a blanket.  If they’re used to sleeping with certain items, don’t expect them to do will without.  BUT, on the other hand, don’t overpack either — only bring the things that you KNOW your kids will want when they go to sleep.

5. A new toy or bag with things in it.

This may sound unusual, but there’s a purpose!   If your kid does well with toys in the crib and goes to sleep with them, then try this trick. Get a small bag and put in a few things in there, maybe new toys that don’t do much or random things like a brush, a baby mirror, a DVD cover, and a card, for example, that are safe for a toddler to handle. Your toddler will dig through the bag and relax as she explores these things. Before she knows it, it’s dreamland time.

6. Get your kids excited about sleeping in a tent.

Around two weeks before you go on your camping trip, pitch your tent in your backyard – this is standard when checking your equipment for holes and leaks.  Since the tent is already set up, it’s a great idea to set up beds inside and treat it like a mini camping trip!  At first, you may want to start slow with simply nap time.  Leave the tent up for a day or two longer and work up to spending the whole night inside with your child.  That way, the tent and their bed inside the tent will already be familiar when you get to your campsite.

7. Try to stick with naps.

Follow your usual schedule and try to help your kids to nap at their usual times.  Most kids do much better when they have a set routine and will become out of sorts if too many things are changed at once.  They are already getting used to a new environment with all sorts of unusual distractions, so sticking with a familiar schedule will help.  However, don’t stress if they simply refuse naps. They’ll be ok.

8. Keep them warm.

Nights can be cold. Keep your little ones warm with several layers of fleece or wool, but don’t put them all on at once. Here’s a good explanation of how to do it!

Tenting can seem intimidating when you have toddlers or babies, but with these tips you’ll be prepared and ready to go!  What other tips do you have when getting a toddler to sleep in a tent?

6 DIY Outdoor Furniture Ideas You Can Build Yourself!

6Great DIY Outdoor Furniture Ideas - @tipsaholic. #DIY #outdoorfurniture #patio #summer

Have you seen the price tag of outdoor furniture these days? It’s crazy how expensive they can be, even on Craig’s List. Avoid emptying out your wallet by building your own DIY outdoor furniture! What’s more, you can build them to fit your patio or porch. Here are 6 great DIY outdoor furniture tutorials you can use to create your dream outdoor space.

1. DIY Outdoor Sectional

Ana White is the queen of the DIY furniture world and this outdoor sectional is a great example of how wonderful her creations are. It includes two plans, one for armless sections and one for corners and ends. These two simple plans combine to create a DIY outdoor sectional that can be as big or small as you want it to be. You can build one piece at a time, at your own pace, and create a sectional that perfectly fits your space. Bonus: cushions from Target will fit these sections, unless you want to make your own cushions.

2. DIY Outdoor Sofa

Here’s another plan from Ana White, which we couldn’t leave out because this beautiful sofa only costs $30 in lumber! You can easily adjust the measurements of this plan to fit whatever cushions you plan to buy or make.

3. DIY Outdoor Bench

This just might be the easiest DIY outdoor furniture ever. It requires no drilling or extensive cutting. All you need is concrete blocks, concrete glue, and four 4x4x10 pieces of lumber to build an outdoor beach for only $40. Nice!

4. DIY Tile Outdoor Table

This gorgeous outdoor table is made with lumber and glass mosaic tile. The coffee table is fairly simple to build, but if you already have an old coffee table laying around you could cover it with your favorite glass mosaic tile following the instructions in this tutorial!

5. DIY Tree Bench

Have a tree in your backyard? Build a bench around its trunk to add extra seating to your outdoor space! This plan is a bit extensive and will cost a tidy sum of money, but its cool factor is out of the world and this nifty bench can add so much charm and function to a backyard.

6. DIY Hammock

Okay, a hammock isn’t exactly a piece of furniture, but it’s something to sit on and can be left outside, so we’re including this great tutorial for a DIY hammock! The tutorial includes two different ways to make your own hammock – one that requires a sewing machine and one that doesn’t.

8 Awesome (And Educational) Pool Activities To Play With Your Kids

8 awesome pool activities for kids - tipsaholic. #poolactivities, #pool, #summer,

pool activities header

Whether you blow up an inflatable pool in your backyard, go to a community pool, or have your own swimming pool at home, you’ll find at least one pool activity from this list that you can play with your kids! These 8 pool activities range from easy and toddler-friendly to challenging and perfect for teens.

1. Colored Water Balloons

This colorful pool activity is perfect for an inflatable pool and younger kids. Fill up your pool with a little water and a bunch of balloons with water and food coloring. Then have your kids smash the water balloons to let out the colored water! They’ll have loads of fun mixing the colors in the water and learn a little bit about color theory in the process.

2. Giant Bubbles

If you have a hula hoop and dish soap, you can create giant bubbles in your wading pool with your kids! Just mix in the dish soap with water in the pool and pull up the hula hoop to make a bubble that can get as big as your kids! Fun and easy.

3. Pool Noodle Boats

Floating boats are always fun to play with in the pool, so why not make a whole bunch of them with a pool noodle, foam sheets, and straws? If you have kids who can craft, include them when making the boats, then let them have fun in the pool. You could even host a boat race!

4. Fishing for Letters

Instill the love for fishing and learning in your toddler at a young age by playing this cute fishing game in a wading pool. Grab magnetic letters and spread them out in the pool and add other items that are water-related, such as shells, but aren’t magnetic. Stick a magnet at the end of a string on a kid’s fishing pole (or use a simple string on a stick) and have your kid fish up the letter magnets! They’ll learn what is magnetic and what isn’t and you can also practice letter recognition with them.  Older kids could even fish out letters to create words!

5. Swimming Pool Scrabble

This swimming activity is great for bigger pools and you can play it with younger kids who are beginning swimmers and/or learning their letters. Write letters on sponges with a permanent marker and throw them into the water. Have your kids swim and collect them. Depending on their age, you could have them arrange the letters in alphabetic order or create words with the sponges they collected.

6. Floating Numbers

There are many pool activities that include letters, but what about numbers? This floating numbers pool activity includes wine corks with numbers written on them. Throw them into a pool and have the kids collect them and play various math games, such as putting them in numerical order or finding only odd or even numbers.

7. F.I.S.H

Are you familiar with the HORSE game that’s played with a basketball and a hoop? The water activity FISH works in the same way. The first player starts off the game by doing a task in the water, such as doing a handstand or swimming a full lap underwater. Then the other players try to do the same activity. If someone can’t do the activity, they “earn” the first letter of FISH. Each player takes turns thinking up of a different and challenging move and the game continues until someone spells the whole word FISH first. This game is great for preteens and older kids!

8. Pool Raft Building Activity

This great team-building activity can be done with preteens and older kids. Promote critical thinking and cooperative skills by asking several kids to build a raft using pool noodles and other materials, such as soft form wire, rope, and a small hand drill. If you have a large group of kids, divide them into teams and see what kind of creations they come up with!

6 Tips to Keep BBQ Fare from becoming a Dieter’s Nightmare

6 Tips to Keep BBQ Fare from becoming a Dieter's Nightmare | Tipsaholic.com #healthy #eating #summer #bbq #diet

 tipsaholic-6-tips-to-keep-bbq-fare-healthy-title

This summer, don’t let the BBQ become your diet downfall. Even the healthiest of eaters can be overwhelmed by the array of dips and fixings at a typical summer bash. Here are six simple ways to combat the BBQ bulge!

1. Skip the chips

tipsaholic-skip-the-chips-lifetime

Salty, crispy, grab-able snacks such as chips, pretzels and snack mixes are everywhere at summer social gatherings. To counter the temptations, fill up the buffet tables with healthier foods with a crunch like salty kale chips or strips of bell peppers to dip in spicy hummus, guacamole, or sour cream. Produce such as broccoli florets, carrots, jicama, cherry tomatoes and baby cucumbers also make great snacks.

2. H2O isn’t just for the pool

tipsaholic-h20-lifetime

Juice, sodas and sweetened teas are often made with high-fructose corn syrup and may contain brominated vegetable oil, which can wreak havoc on our bodies. Instead, pack coolers with sparkling mineral water, unsweetened tea, or offer a water cooler filled with chilled cucumber – mint or berry/citrus-infused water.

3. Banish the bun

tipsaholic-banish-the-bun-lifetime

Despite the fact that bread products raise blood sugar as quickly and as much as eating two tablespoons of pure sugar, we still seem to fill these picnic staples with anything we can throw on the grill. Try going bun-less by eating with a fork and knife to slow down your eating. Use a lettuce-wrap approach to put some color into your meal or toss your grilled goods on top of a plate of hearty salad greens.

4. Eat your hot dog naked

tipsaholic-naked-hot-dog-lifetime

Most condiments are packed with unsavory additives to enhance flavor, shelf life, texture, or appearance. Season with fresh or dried herbs and seasonings and try dry rubs for chicken and ribs, pack some fresh herbs and spices into your grass-fed burger patties, or marinate your poultry or seafood with olive oil, citrus, and herbs before searing them on the grill. Fresh salsa, guacamole, sour cream, or hearty mustard are great toppings for your bun-less burger, chicken, or brats.

5. Make faux salads a faux pas

tipsaholic-no-faux-salads-lifetime

Potato salads, macaroni salad and pasta salad do not offer our bodies any true nourishment. Replacing these sides with some roasted vegetable salads or crisp, lightly-dressed coleslaw or use Greek yogurt in place of mayonnaise or sour cream when making your own side dishes.

6. Don’t chase the ice cream man

tipsaholic-fruit-dessert-lifetime

Popular summer desserts such as gelatin and colorful ice pops include artificial coloring agents that could just as easily dye our hair, clothing, or crafts. Instead, choose to naturally sweeten up your party with fruit kabobs, frozen berries with heavy cream, or homemade real-fruit popsicles.
