15 Outdated Dating Rules That Will Leave You Shocked

Dating in the 21st century is a whole new ball game!  Compared to what our parents or grandparents went through.

Luckily, some outdated “rules” have faded away.  Let’s take a look at 15 dating rules that will leave you surprised (or maybe even a little horrified):

15. Only date with matrimony in mind:

This rule transforms every coffee meetup into a stressful marriage interview. Dating is a great way to get to know someone and see if you’re compatible on a personal level, if you share similar life goals, and if there’s a spark.   Relax, have fun, and enjoy getting to know someone without the pressure of a lifelong commitment looming over every conversation.

14. Never, ever make the first move (for girls):

This one is so outdated it belongs in a museum exhibit on antiquated social norms! Gone are the days of waiting for Prince Charming to sweep you off your feet. If you see someone you’re interested in, go for it! The worst they can say is no, and the best? You might just meet your perfect match.

The modern dating world thrives on mutual interest, and taking the initiative shows confidence and puts you in control of your dating life.

13. Always act ladylike:

There’s nothing wrong with being polite and respectful, but this rule can be incredibly restrictive. Being yourself is the most attractive quality you can possess! If you’re having a good time, it’ll show. Don’t feel like you have to pretend to be someone you’re not to impress someone.  Embrace your quirks, your sense of humor, and your passions. The right person will appreciate you for who you truly are.

12. Never kiss and tell:

This might have been a good idea back in the day when gossip spread like wildfire through a small town, but today, it’s all about communication and trust. If you had a great date and want to tell your friends, go for it! Just be respectful of the other person and avoid sharing overly personal details.

Open communication is key in any relationship, and being honest with your friends about your dating life can help you get valuable feedback and support.

11. Never date outside your religion:

Love knows no bounds! While religion can be an important part of someone’s life, it shouldn’t be the sole factor when deciding who to date. Keep an open mind and focus on finding someone who shares your values, respects your beliefs, and supports your personal growth.

You might be surprised to discover amazing connections with people from different backgrounds.

10. Always date taller men:

This arbitrary height requirement is as outdated as dial-up internet! There’s no magic formula for love based on physical stature. Confidence and mutual attraction are far more important.

Look for someone who makes you feel good about yourself, respects you, and who you can have a great conversation with, regardless of their height.

9. Men always pay:

Chivalry isn’t dead, but expecting men to shoulder the financial burden every single time is a relic of the past. Dating should be about equal footing and shared experiences. Discuss finances openly and decide what feels fair for both of you.

Whether you split the bill, take turns paying, or occasionally treat each other, finding a balance that works for your partnership is key.

8. Wait three days to call or text after a date:

This rule might have originated in a time before cell phones, but it’s unnecessary today. If you had a great time and want to connect, send a message! There’s no need to play games.

Open communication shows you’re interested and avoids any unnecessary confusion.

7. Playing hard to get:

This tactic might have worked in some cheesy rom-com, but in reality, it just creates unnecessary drama. Be genuine, be upfront about your interest, and focus on building a real connection.

The right person will appreciate your honesty and directness.

6. Never share your feelings until they do:

Bottling up your emotions isn’t healthy for any relationship. If you care about someone, let them know! Open communication is essential for building trust and intimacy.

Of course, be mindful of the situation and avoid overwhelming someone on the first date, but don’t be afraid to express yourself authentically.

5. Our ex is off-limits forever:

While some breakups necessitate clear boundaries and a clean break, sometimes rekindling an old flame can be a wonderful thing. If enough time has passed and both partners have grown and learned from the past mistakes, there’s no harm in revisiting the connection if the opportunity arises.

However, proceed with caution and open communication. Ensure both partners are truly over the past relationship and on the same page about the expectations for this new chapter.

4. Don’t discuss finances early on:

Money is a major factor that can impact any relationship’s long-term success. Having open and honest conversations about finances early on can help avoid future stress and ensure you’re on the same page regarding financial goals and spending habits. Discuss your budgeting styles, debt levels, and saving plans.

Talking openly about money matters helps build trust and transparency in your relationship.

3. Never take a break:

Sometimes relationships need a chance to breathe. Taking a break can be an opportunity to reevaluate your needs and see if you’re still on the same page. Open communication is key here too.

Discuss your needs and expectations with your partner before taking a break to avoid misunderstandings.

2. Your partner should complete you:

A healthy relationship is about two whole people coming together, not needing someone to fill a void. Focus on being happy and fulfilled on your own, and then share your joy with your partner.

A strong relationship is built on mutual respect, support, and shared goals, not codependency.

1. Don’t date a single parent:

Single parents are strong, resourceful individuals who bring a wealth of love and experience to a relationship. Don’t be afraid to date someone with children.

Their family can become an extension of yours, and you might be surprised by the joys of blended families.

Dating in the 21st century is all about ditching outdated rules and embracing genuine connections. Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there, be upfront about your wants, and focus on finding someone who complements your amazing self. Happy dating!
